I'm getting to the hard part of my SV rebuild project now...
Was going to drop in another engine in that I had but wanted to keep the original engine due to the low miles on it. Anyways... the question, how hard is it to change the cases on a carb'd engine and what online guides are around? got a haynes manual but it always mamages to confuse the hell out of me!! any help is really appriciated ![]() |

I don't understand why you are asking the question, if the original engine is low mileage then use that. It's a *lot* of work to rebuild an engine.
If you mean the side covers then that's easy but will (ideally) need new gaskets. Druid

The clutch cover is very easy to change (I did mine in about 10 minutes last week), the engine casings should be pretty easy. I can lend you a haynes manual for a while if you need a hand.

As above really. The clutch cover / side covers can be changed easily with an 8mm socket. The main engine cases require a full strip / rebuild of the engine.

If you REALLY ARE going to change the cases, do it as a pair.
They are usually machined as a pair

Yep splitting the cases hasn't been to difficult for me so far proving you have the right tools (alternator puller, and clutch holder). Now getting them back together is another thing…
If you want any photos I’ve got loads that I took while taking mine apart and I’m about to start tearing down a spare engine to salvage the clutch and crank for my rebuild so any I don’t have can be taken here. But if it’s just the covers then that should be far simpler to do. |
