Default Sat Nav for car help

Hi guys,

I need to pick up a sat-nav sharpish for a car, but have no idea what is good and what isnt. I dont want to spend alot (as I dont have alot to spend).

Are there any brands that are poor and I should stay away from? Ive only ever used a tomtom before and that seemed fine, but I have no idea where that sits in the market.

Any good bargins to be found that anyone knows of?

Thanks for your help

I've got a Tom-Tom One. No problems, and it alerts you as you approach static speed cams.

You cant go wrong with a tomtom. Should get one for under a ton.
I've had a garmin, binatone, and a wierd round one from blaupunkt - all rubbish compared.
I've also got tomtom on my phone.. depends on your phone of course, but cheap as tommy torrent if your phone supports it.

I would go for a Tomtom GO720. I had one and it is brilliant. Had to get a rider thought which is water proof and useavle in teh car and on the bike.

Hmm... it just so happens my TomTom is spare now. If you're interested

I got one of these from Ebuyer, the mapping software that it comes with is carp

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161002

Attachment 5251

However, searching through the Ebuyer forums, I found that you can use other software (Navigon I think), which is free to download, which is 100% better than the OEM software. The one thing that is missing is selecting your destination by postcode. Other than this, I can't fault it now

It wasn't difficult to do either, just load the software onto an SD card (you can use the one that came with the sat nav, but you'll need to delete the OEM software. Both this and the OEM software run off the SD card.

We use TomToms at work and they can't really be faulted, although the maps a sometimes still out of date! They have postcode search which is great.

Both this and our TomTom's suffer from poor battery life

My tomtom battery life isnt great, but then thats why they have a car charger.

Ive used TomTom for the last 3-4 years, and its taken me to the wrong place once.

The 'traffic' service is brilliant and has saved countless hours of jam tedium

The traffic service is one thing my garmin doesn't have. Do the tomtom's have free map updates?

Really is that why they come with a charging lead, you're kidding right

Surely you pay extra for the traffic service?
