tim in belgium is the guy in the know
he goes every other month i prefered the roads to the ring, than the ring, but as normaly i have not got a clue where i was going. the bikers loft in ostend is a must if you plan to stay somewhere on route over night, watch out for the 18% beer, its a bit strong Last edited by hovis; 24-09-09 at 02:11 PM. |

+1 on the bikers loft. Great place to stop.
Have a look on here too: http://www.aeaventures.com/ Might be lucky and get a place to stay at short notice. Neil, the chap who owns it, lead us to the Ring and took us round when we were there...

That's pure lies Hovis, I've only been twice a month since April! 10 trips I think this year
![]() Mike, depending on how long you've got you could do a number of routes. Assuming you're coming across the channel I'd head south passed Brussels on the motorways, get off at Namur, head to Dinant (nice castle on the hill), and then across the Ardennes (lots of wiggly routes available), some nice towns to stop at, La Roche en Ardenne. I'd then aim to join up with the B258 in Germany around Monscahu then head to the Nurburgring area. This would be a long single day, and would be better over 1.5-2 days if you want to stop and visit places along the way. If you want to get to the Ring in one 4 hour push I'd motorway to just passed Liege, turn off at Eupen, then head for Monschaua and B258 it to Nurburg. Once at the 'Ring there's always the option of doing a day trip down to Cochem, a nice town on the river Mosel, in the Mosel valley. I presume you've checked the track opening times for when you are there: http://www.nuerburgring.de/ft/events...enfahrten.html For local accomodation to the ring try sliders (20 mins away ~ 32 euro B&B) or the Burgstube (2-5mins away, a bit more but not too expensive). If you want to know anything else feel free to ask. |

I did this last month from Warwick. It's easily do-able in a day if you stick to motorways. On the way down I left at about 3pm and stayed at the Etap hoten in Dunkirk, then went on to Adenau the next day. On the way home I did it in one go. Took about 10 hours but it wasn't exactly what you'd call fun, if you have the time i'd take the scenic route but I couldn't find anywhere in Northern France or Belgium that looked very exciting so wanted to spend as much time in the Eifel as possible as the roads there are amazing.
I stayed here quite a nice place and they have a garage to leave your bikes in. Bloke who runs it is really good, even let me borrow a batter charger when mine was flat one morning. Are you taking your bike on the track? It was a bit wet when I was over there and my mate's bike was playing up so we rented a car from here IMO it's much safer and probably more fun to go round the ring in a car than on a bike.

I lived in Cologne last year. Aachen and Monschau (as mentioned before) are well worth a visit if you have time. The area around and north of the Ring is called the Eifel and lots of small towns with fantastic medieval architechture if you are interested in that. Monschau by far the best I visited though. Didn't have a bike there but some of the roads round that area would be great biking roads.
Koblenz on the Rhine is also a beautiful old town. So many old towns and castles etc all along the Rhine. If you have a bit more time and can detour via Cologne the cathedral is spectacular, as are the views from the Drachenfels near Konigswinter south of Bonn. Make sure you try some Kolsch beer too - superb German beer, can't go wrong! Just dont be all cynical about the 200ml glasses they serve it in - keeps it fresh and cool and the waiter will be putting you another down the minute you finish. I'll post a few pics later from some cycling I did round that area. |

Visit Blinkenheim.
The ride from Adenau to Blinkenheim for me goes down as the best ride in my life so far. Sublime roads, scenery and no traffic. Bliss. ![]() |
