Assembly is the reverse of disassembly - you did take notes on how it came apart?

The barend 'fastens' back in by squidging the rubber so it grips the tube, so it needs two things to be squidged between, one that is fixed and one that tightensd when the screw is turned. When you tighten the screw, its not screwing into anything, its turning the washer so squishing the rubber. Without digging out a manual, (theres a link to the SV one on here somewhere) I can't remeber what bit goes in first but you should be able to work out what the rubber needs to be squidged between.

the washer just slides over the screw yeah? i dont see how the washer is meant to squish up as it slides freely?

There should be a rubber bit that gets squashed between 2 washers when you tighten the screw. The rubber bit pushes outwards and grips the inside of the bar.
I've had a bit of trouble with these before and I always found fastening the screw slightly before you put it in the bar (so it gives a tight fit) and giving it a helping hand with a soft mallet into the bar always helped. Then give it a tighten and it should be done.
