Default Recommend me- A Cheap Hatchback

Right- bonus permitting, I'll be getting a car in the new year some time. Needs to be cheap- ie around £5-900 and known for reliability at high mileage (doubt I'll get anything lower than 70k miles for this moolah).

Was considering an Escort (my first car was a Mk3 Escort- loved that motor!), but I know Fords can be a bit dicey for cam belts.

I also need something that's not going to be absurd money on the insurance- so I'd assume Golfs are out...

Any recommendations?

Cheers both.

However- can't stand Micras- was the first car I learned in and hated it.

I really would consider the Golf. Great cars. I guess I could ask the insurance co.

What are Ford Escorts like at that mileage?

Saxo's are fairly cheap now and not bad runners either (jenns just killed hers off as it was her first car, more pilot issues than the car!).

pug 206 are comming down in price now as they have been about a few years too( shame its french).

You may find a decent clio about too (but its still french)

The down side with a cheap car is that if you tell the insurance company that its worth 900 quid, they tend to think youll drive it like you dont care and the premium can be a little more loaded

Cheers- I did consider Peugots.

Not too bothered about it being French. I had a Laguna for a few years that I was very happy with.

Clio is possibly a touch small- need room for guitars and amps in the back of it.

Saw a few 306s for around this money. Anything mechanically dicey about older models of these?

Probably wont be to bad on poverty spec one, but a GTI or something similar isnt going to be so cheap...

MKII might be hard to find a good one now, MKIII will definately be doable. But... steer clear of the 1.4 Petrol MKIII Golfs, its a big heavy lump the 1.4 has no go in it watsoever...

Urgh... I know a few people with Clio's all have ended up with big repair bills when they've gone wrong. Electrical stuff mostly, you have been warned. Personally I'd not touch one with a barge pole...

I have had issues with 2 pugs in the past.

Mainly the oil and water mixing itself
