Default TDC on the rear cylinder?

when turning the crank to get tdc on the rear cylinder should the mark in the inspection window be an R or an F? On mine it's an F is that normal? The C and D are the right way up and the arrows are in the right place but i would have thought R stands for Rear, is that not correct?

thanks si

anyone about that knows - I could do with getting the valve cover back on but want to make sure I have down the clearances correctly first.

TDC for the Rear cylinder is "R" on the timing inspection cover. HOWEVER, all timing markers for lining up the cams for both front AND rear cylinders use the "F" marker as a point of reference.

Please be careful if you're swapping cams out, not understanding the process completely can quite easily lead to a wrecked engine.

Just doing the clearances and I have measured the rear on F with the C and D centred and the arrows point at the edges of the chain cover thing, is that right?

R mark for TDC. But for purposes of what you are doing just look at cams, so long as no valves are being opened on the cylinder you are messing with it is fine, you do not need exact TDC

ok the results are in for my first ever valve clearance check:

Front Cylinder:

Exhaust:
Left - 0.21mm Right 0.25mm

Inlet:
Left - 0.13mm Right 0.13mm

Rear cylinder

Inlet:
Left - 0.15mm Right 0.15mm

Exhaust:
Left - 0.23mm Right 0.23mm

Now I think that's ok, which would be good

You may not get correct reading that way, especially exhaust cam.
To check clearance you use F for front and R for rear or make sure cam lobes point up.
To install cams you use F mark for both front and rear but one revolution apart.
