Was sitting outside A&E entrance at local hospital the other night having just dropped my latest victim off when 2 hatchbacks came hacking past at about 50mph obviously racing. Bearing in mind that this road was on hospital property and the posted limit is 5 mph I thought what a pair of to**ers.
They vanished into the night and we didn't think anything more about it until the next call came down... RTC car vs. tree! A kid who had passed his test a couple of days before now had a tree growing out of the middle of his 2 year old VW Polo's bonnet. No injuries but the police were querying who the "real" main driver was on the insurance policy i.e him or his mum (who incidently was royally pi**ed off with him when she turned up). Also a passer by (who didn't want to make a formal complaint) mentioned to the copper that they had seen this and another car "racing" before hearing a crashing noise and a lot of swearing... As no one was injured and no other vehicles were involved I don't think he was reported for any driving offences but the police were failrly confident that somone was going to be significantly out of pocket and were going to have a chat with his mum about his racing. His version was that he had made a turn in third gear instead of second causing him to take the corner too fast and understeer crossing to the right side of the road where he then had to swerve back to avoid a parked van... I don't normally laugh at other people's misfortunes (bad karma) but on this occasion I'm prepared to make an exception. He was lucky, it could have had a very different outcome, I'm not so concerned about him and his passengers but for the poor pedestrian or road user he could have hit. On a positive note, I see again that VWs seem to do a pretty good job of protecting the occupants although a mod that switches between driver's airbag and 18" steel spike depending on the circumstances may be an idea for future designs... |

And I got done for not being in proper control! wtf
![]() I'm a firm believer in doing away with all speeding offences and lots of other offences, but if you actually crash proving you were out of control then have the book thrown at you. |

In the circumstances described, I would have certainly considered a prosecution for DWDC.

I on the other hand am a firm believer in doing away with all the modern safety aids fitted to vehicles. A six inch spike in the centre of the steering wheel instead of an airbag would do wonders for road safety.... Inquests are so much cheaper than trials and the conviction rate is much higher with very few appeals.

2 kids doing the same thing last year by me wasnt so lucky, they were racing on a straight road in Chelmsley wood (crappy estate) and hit a tree, both dead.
My mates nephew / labourer was good friends with them and had been to bassetts pole with them earlier in night, still flowers on the tree now. Sounds like the guy you mentioned was very lucky. |

![]() It's never totally the other person's fault, you can always do something to avoid a collision. |
