Default Speedo non functioning.

Recently did a long trip from Minneapolis to Oklahoma City on my 2001 (no issues). While there my speedo/odo sporadically stopped working over the course of 2 days and is now completely non-functioning. I can still read trip meter and odometer (although it doesn't increase).

I did notice while it was giving me issues that there was a whirring noise coming from the console and the speedo would kick in after reaching 40mph. I bring this up because I'm going to assume this is a mechanical issue (cable) vs. a sensor issue due to the strange noise. Would love to understand from anyone with more expertise if you've seen this before.

I did go to the local shop in OKC prior to my return, they didn't diagnose it, but I had them check their inventory and they informed me that there was at least a week lead time on a new cable if I needed it. So now I'm back and would like to address the issue at home first and then in the shop if needed.

It's possible it came from front wheel, hard to tell but it was from that general area. Only heard the noise when over 40mph so it was a bit difficult to pinpoint the exact area.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

sounds like it is the speedo rotor, its under the plastic but on the front wheel

top is how its supposed to be,bottom is the most common damage but mine actually disintegrated (literally nothing but dust left )

Wow thanks.

Really appreciate the help and the picture. I'll take it apart this weekend to see if that's the issue.

BTW, I (with the help of a few others)stole the Rugby town sign while on a Rugby tour to your fine town years ago. It's hanging in a bar in Minneapolis, MN. Couldn't resist. I'm sure you make many just idiots like me (I was young and dumb).
