CRAZY car insurance!

Trying to find a cheap quote I called Motaquote and was asked if I ever used my car between 11pm and 5am.

ME: Yes.
THEM: Then our product probably isn't for you, sir.
ME: I don't understand.
THEM: Well, we fit your car with a tracking device, and if you drive it between those hours then we charge you £45 for every occurence.
ME: When did you start doing this?!?
THEM: It's always been our policy, sir, as part of providing insurance for young drivers.
ME: What counts as a 'young driver'?
THEM: 23 and younger.
ME: I'm 30.
THEM: Ah, sorry, you've come through to i-kube which is for younger drivers, do you just want a normal insurance quote?

I had a quote (and it was ****) but BLIMEY what a ridiculous thing that is, a tracking device!

Makes sense to me if you want cheap insurance... its the most high risk time, if they are not using a vechicle between that time the risk is much lower and so is the premium.

In Ireland its lat that new or young driver cant driver between cwertain times.

America (as you could guess) go a whole step further. Insurance companies there even install camera that give a 360 view of the car so they can determine who was at fault etc.

Surely in the middle of the night when no-one is about you are less likley to have an accident.

So why he **** can they put up premiums if you drive in rush hour if they now declared 11pm to 5 am the Red zone..

I am so glad I started drivng when I did. When I was 17 my insurance on a Golf GTI was about £600.

A guy I work with who is 21 pays nearly 2 grand on a 1.25 fiesta!

Yeah I've seen those installed cameras that the Yanks have, its quite a good solution plus it provides loads of You tube funnies.

THe time lock on young drivers does make sense too, its the ones out cruising in the tesco car park who are likely to park around a tree at somepoint trying to street race when the roads are clear in the early hours. Fine them for driving after 11 and you'll find they wont get to do it as much, Im for that 100% IMO great idea.

I read it somewhere but I am still looking for the report, and I am sure they have not just plucked the figures from their heads anyway... but

Most general deaths on the roads occur between 11pm and 5am. These are generally caused by people falling a sleep at the wheel...hence you get ready for work to find the M1/M25/M5 is closed AGAIN!!!!

Most young crashes are caused between this time also, as they lack experience driving... driving in the dark is inherently more dangerous with less experience.

They also tend to hang around handbrake turning in their local low cost supermarket car park in the evening with 'mates'

They also pick their 4 mates up from town at night as a free taxi, then they show off killing everyone on board.

The list goes on. I am sure they have the stats to back it up and make it worth their while.

I am sure it is tru and based on hard stats, I was just very suprised.

However thinking back to when I was young I did all the things G has mentioned, expecpt for the crashing and killing bit.
