Default Newlands Corner dangers!

'evening everyone.

Just wanted to bring your attention to this little article about a potentially extremely dangerous situation for us bikers. What isn't mentioned in that article is that apparently there was also a length strung across the carpark. Nasty stuff.

Was up at Newlands on Thursday night and was approached by a police officer who told me to be careful, they suspect that they will try to repeat the stunt.

Stay safe all!

I was actually talking about this with my OH the other day (don't know how we got on the subject - probably while watching some cheesy horror film).

We were trying to work out whether this actually happens or whether its a urban myth type thing that only happens in movies. Well, now I know.... eek

Well a kid who works for the extended family was killed up here last year or so by wire across the track.

At first they thought it was deliberate to target illegal bikers. Turned out that the land owner was wiring up all holes in his fence as a temp method of keeping his cattle in because knobs had smashed down the fence to create their illegal track

edit here is a visors down link to that story

Anyone who does that intentionally deserves beating to within an inch of their lives and I would love to get hold of them. I just don't understand people sometimes. Sounds like that farmer had every right to keep his cattle from escaping in that case. If the land was private and should not have been used for off roading in the first place then it's just a sad accident.

Forgive my ignorance - but this is a hazard to walkers / cyclists only isn't it?

When I first read this I thought it was a wire across the road - so you ould be riding into it at around 50mph but this is not the case right?

Well this could be a risk to bikers, as I said in my first post the Police were up at Newlands corner on thursday and told us that there had been wire strung across the car park between the entry/exit separating island and the woods.
And of course this, even if it doesn't lop your head off it will carry you backwards off your bike if you're carrying any kind of forward momentum.

You don't need to use wire though. Some prat up here tried to use a sofa to take out any biker

yeah they've used fishing wire across the oldrail way by us.

It wasnt illegal to ride on there as it was old national rail land. They'd removed all the old line shortly before it all becaume privatised. The land was never bought so became common land at privatisaion, it was around this time the fishing wire started going up some nasty stories were flying around at the time but it was all "friend of a friend" stuff then the council claimed/bought the land and its now been turned into a tarmac bridleway where everything except motorbikes are welcome admitantly that doesnt stop everyone.
