Question sv1000 speedo sensor

was looking with intrest at the sv1000 speedo sensor as a replacement when i do my gsxr front end swap.

it looks a lot neater and less bother than the front method with magnets to do.

only drawback that i can find is the clutch mechanisim on the sv650 might interfear with the added bits.

what your view?

I take it 'tis a front sprocket sensor then?

I reckon the ratio will be totally wrong, at a very rough guess from the reasoning that the front sprocket is spinning really fast, with 15 teeth, whereas the wheel is spinning fairly slowly, with effectively 4 teeth.

errmmm no .. i will have to drill and tap a thread into the output shaft to fit the 1000 rotor and drill a hole in the sprocket casing of the 650 for the sensor.

this is the fitment that the 1000 has as standard... speed picked up from front sprocket with a rotor(magnets as persay) and the sensor(geer tooth as persay)...

Even with only one magnet surely it will overread to extreme?

Not entirely sure on this, just my thoughts.

my thaughts were, hey the speedo looks the same, wonder if it is, had a look on ron ayers, and the part numbers are ooooh so close, e.g. 650 is 34120-17G80 and the 1000 is 34120-16G80. so my reconing is that the sensor is designed to work with the speedo. supose the only way to tell is to try and track down a second hand sensor and try it as mock up first.

me and my bro had a discussion on this very subject about a week ago and i couldent get my head round it, till he said back wheel, front wheel, back sprocket, front sprocket, it makes no odds they are all relitive to the speed at which you are doing its just a matter of getting the pulse right.

Yes you will still get a readout, but unless you find a way to change the frequency of the pulse then it'll be totally wrong readout. Maybe a speedo healer will have enough adjustment to do that?

well i found out its the same sensor for all gsxr's tl's sv ect ect from 1999....

the only difference is the rotor ..

so i'm in the prosess of tracking one down to try .. the rotor for the sv1000 k7 is only £10 ish .. so it looks like some testing is on the cards.

Elegant solution but I reckon it will massively over-read.

its worth a try though chris (may i call you chris)...

i cant realy see a problem as in the sv1000 has the same clocks. i have had a look at all the different rotors for all the various bikes and they are all different designs.. some have 8 teeth some 4 ect ect... as long as i match the 1000 and 650 year it should be a goer.

if it works it will be a lot cheeper, easier and neeter for ppl to do a front end swap. i dont mind splashing the cash in aid of progress.

now the only thing i can see being a slight problem is the different years and rotor configurations. also the mounting of the rotor to the sprocket. i would prefer not to drill and tap the output shaft if i can help it (i have a full blacksmith shop and ss engineers shop at my disposal for nowt) that is why i have come to the conclusion of drilling and taping 2 holes on the sprcket with a spacer with same pitch of holes aka the rotor and bolt everything together that way. this i can see being a stumbeling block for the avarage diy'r with limited facilitys.

the other thing that might stop it from working is the phisical space in the sprocket housing of the 650, its a bit tight in there.

i will be doing the gixxer swap in aprox 10 days time with luck (just wating on parts) so i will know then if it works or not, i might even do a mock test on the 650 if the sensor and rotor come in before the other parts.

my fail safe is i have orderd the digikey/magnet soultion aswel.

i'm planing on doing a full strip and install thread with piccys of the swap when it happens...
