What kind of Landrover you looking at?

Defender
Discovery
Range Rover

** EDIT **

Buy a big hammer
Increase your overdraft, things WILL go wrong, but that's all part of the charm
Buy a bigger hammer

You're after a TD5 then.

Main consensus is buy either a late Discovery 300Tdi or a later revised model TD5 (not sure of the year they changed maybe 2003).

When the TD5 came out it had the 10p engine (engine type not how much it cost before you Mitsubishi owners get rowdy [MIKE]), had a few common problems, they revised most of this and brought out the facelift model with a better 15p engine.

NOW, I just happen to have a 1999/2000 Disco TD5 sat on my drive that is going on e-bay soon. I bought it as a fixer upper and it is still a fixer upper, not had the time to dedicate to it that I thought I would. Done some stuff to it, basically it's got a coolant leak, not great, could be a crack in the head, could be a crack in the engine (could possibly be a new engine jobby) I have no idea and can't be R'sed finding out so it will find a new home with someone who wants to tinker with it more than I do/did. So there is one option for you.

Personally, if you don't want a cheap fixxer upper I would find a late 300Tdi they went upto 98 with a few being registered in 1999 or a facelift model TD5.

Next and most influential question.

HOW MUCH?

What do you want it for?

Work
Play
Hunting/shooting/fishing

You can have three or five door

Three door could be a commercial eg a two seater van with space in the back, could be five seats with windows or panels (commercial again) in the back

Five door could be five or seven seats. It's a big mecchano plaground all depends what you want it for.

We bought ours because we wanted to take it off road and have the four dogs in it and take it camping.

Remembering that additions to it cost money, if you want to off road it, how bad, trials truck (guessing not for that money), do you want winches, CB's ??

Hmm Birmingham eh, watch out, Drew might be around to liberate it from you

; )

My sister had one, four cylinder petrol, not sure what model, but it was an absolute liability. So many things went wrong with it I cant begin to remember them all.It came from a "reputable" Land Rover dealer, but after a couple of years it was sold at a huge loss just to save on yet more repair bills.Unless you are really committed to the thing I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole.

Get under it in it and over it... check everything, ball joints for knocking 1 through 5. Oil leaks, servicing history stamps, last time the cam belt was replaced is a good start, gear box oil renewal date, swivel housing joints and wheel hub bearing stripped regreased. emissions test cert. check colour of transmission brake for blueing ( the parking brake shoes might need replacing.)
check condition of exhausts manifolds and EGR (take pipe off at bulk head and suck make a depression in the pipe and let it go, you should hear a pop / click noise if not its knackered) / check the turbo is working and not making too much noise. check viscouse coupling rotates but has no other latteral movement.
