Default Quick tyre question.

I know it's time for a tire change for a fact. The tread is almost gone on the center and not-so-gone on the sides. At it's lowest, the tread has 2mm left.

There are 2 spots on the back tire, on the very center where there never was any thread where I can see a very slight hint of the metal structure underneath (I mean there's a little glitter in some very small spots). The spots are about 1cm wide and ~4cm long, obviously the result of wear during some hard braking or accelerating, as otherwise it would have been more uniform, and the glitter is some 2mm deep inside the tire

Problem is: I have a bike meeting I itend to attend to and it would involve some 600-700 miles of riding. I have ordered new tires, but they won't be here in time for me to get to the meeting (to which I really want to go..).

Considering I ride sensibly, is the risk of a tire explosion high?

And yes, I know they should have been changed long before this, but as the economy goes, I've been short on the cash to do so... But fire away if you feel I must get flamed..

Later edit : I will post pictures as soon as possible

If that is the carcass showing through the rubber, then I wouldn't ride it anywhere except locally to have new ones fitted. (but from your description I'm not certain that it is)

Long and short of it is that losing the tyre 300 miles from home would be unfortunate, especially at speed! I'd play safe but that's just me

If it's showing metal banding at any point, there will be a tiny ammount of rubber covering it round the rest of the centre of the tyre. Noting like 2mm, or it would feel like a 50p piece on the road

Don't ride 600 miles on it, get a part-worn fitted from a trye shop if needed, but when you can see metal or canvas, the discussion about whether it's OK anymore is over.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Jambo

Edit: Your description seems a little odd, a photo might remove any confusion about whether this was the metal belt showing through.

put a lock on your bike and give someone you trust the key untill you have fresh rubber on.

Lol, you're right.. I shouldn't have even considered it. I'll just stay home if I don't find tyres. Simples

Weeeell, the postman had something too good to be true for me today!!
A brand new Michelin Pilot Road 2 for my bikes butt!
Which means I took the lock of it and got to the workshop and had the tire changed.

On top of that, I had the bar raiser kit I built with the help of local workshops installed... WHAT A CHANGE!! the position is sooo much more comfy and good for long distance. Plus the extra bar width really helps with leverage to turn into curves

I will post pictures tomorrow (I know I keep promising and never do it, 'cause I'm too lazy to get the pictures from my phone to the computer, but I'll get to it tomorrow.. honest I will!) and then on Saturday I'm of to the mountains for a little getaway
