Question How long can used tyres be stored?

Hello,
I have bought a set of Pilot Road 2 about 2 years ago, put them on my SV650 and rode for 2 months. Then the engine gone and I broke the bike, left the tyres stored in a dry dark and chilly garage. They're lying on their side stripped from the wheels for a year and half now, showing no cracks or signs dryness.

My other bike uses the same size tyres but dont need a replacement now.

My question is how long it is ok to store them in the above conditions until they expire.

Thanks in advance

I worked in a tyre garage as a lad in the eighties. Storage rules were;
- off the floor
- in the dry
- out of sunlight
- away from electrical equipment
- not stacked higher than four tyres

Customers who stored tyres (rally-ers, classic rebuilders) were advised to wrap them in plastic to prevent loss of solvents (or something like that).

The boss reckoned tyres lasted better in use than on a shelf and would have definitely chucked yours.

5 years after manufacture was viewed as maximum safe life of a tyre under any circumstances. Cracks and weakspots may not show up until the tyre is under pressure. Having said that, we had old bangers in that were still running on ancient cross-ply tyres with no problems. The boss referred to them as kamikaze pilots!

This guy had an interest in people replacing tyres but he also had a professional approach and a business to run so erred on the side of caution.

Would you have confidence in the tyres after that length of time?

I guess it depends on the tyre and what you use them for. I bought a set of slicks for my Supermoto bike about five years ago and i still pull the front one out of storage and put it on for the odd trackday. Been through several rears but Supermoto bikes are easy on the front tyre and it's showing no signs of being retired yet..... I'd have no issue with a two year old set of road tyres.

Thanks, I guess it all depends on the current tyres of the new bike, will see it Saturday...

Cheers
