Joining the fire service?

Are any of the .org in the fire service or do any of you know anything about joining it? I've wanted to train to be a fire fighter for a while now rather than being stuck in a dead end job behind a till but have no idea where to begin?

i know one thing , they look for people with initiative........

thats the best place - fitness at the moment is a key thing ( mile in 6 mins if i remember) as well and be prepared for a barrage of pyschometric testing. Its a nightmare

You'll be lucky to find anywhere recruiting.

They all underwent massive restructuring a couple of year ago from what I can remember in the press... and they'll need to be looking at cutting cost further with the most recent budgets.

It's probably easier arranging to meet the queen in person whilst naked than securing a job in the public sector right now.

Hiya go to the LFS website first of all as it normally says if they are recruiting etc ...... normal process is 1 in 100 get through as they are normally swamped with applicants ...
but they do recruit and even if you start as retained and not whole time its a foot in the door to it .. physical test is way easier than people make out long as you are pretty fit think its the water pressures and the maths stuff that is hard .. pm me if u need any info was married to a fireman for 7 years and know a few in the trade still ..

true but a lot of brigades will be seeing a lot of the staff leaving due to retirement and they need a minimum amounts to continue the service
many cuts are expected to be office based. but public sector is going to get a battering over the next few years

Check out that site.Hard to find any reference to firefighting.All swamped by the "value diversity multicultural" nonsense.You would think an emergency service had other things to worry about but no.

My other half's a senior officer in the LFB. He lurks on here sometimes, but let me know if you want a word.

First off light a few fires and see how you get on with putting them out, just to see if it's what you really want of course. hth
