What model sportmax is it? I had DR208's or something and they weren't bad but not the best by far. Fine for hooning round on , just not the most confidence inspiring, I had a weird feeling they were going to let go at any minute when leant over...they never did and I used them 'til they wore out then changed.

As Dave says "Sportmax" covers a wide range of tyres.
If you have the original Dunlop D220 tyres fitted then people will probably suggest they're less than brilliant. While I would say there are better tyres out there if you're buying another set, I never bought into the same feelings that these were half as bad as some people felt they were. And I did a fair few miles on them in less than great conditions. Modern tyres are pretty much all great, but they can't stop you from riding outside what the conditions allow, no matter who's name is on the side wall. Jambo

cheers for that , my problem is i am doing my direct access and have never drove the sv at all , i bought a new ybr125 5 weeks ago done my cbt and promised i wouldn't buy anything bigger , 10 days later howling gales (ok maybe a stiff breeze) convinced me i needed something that wouldn't get blown away , wiser people than me convinced me the sv was the way to go so i bought one , during a break in my first big bike lesson today (cb500) the discussion turned to tyres and dunlop took a kicking , now i have concerns and now being officialy middle aged i don't bounce as well as i used to so all advice on grip is greatfully received .

The current crop of Sports Touring tyres are all about the same, with the PR3's (Michelin's) being slightly ahead for the wet conditions.

Well a mis-matched pair isn't quite what you'd put on there with a full choice of tyres in front of you. But I'd happily ride that assuming they're in good condition with correct-ish pressures without any worries if that helps

I had dunlops on my GSXR k8, the guy I bought it from ( a mate ) slated them. So I kind of had it in my head that they were rubbish before trying them - however I found that they were fine. I was a bit wary of them at 1st but when I got his "wise words" out of my head I never had any issues.

Personally I'm a bit of a Dunlop fan, and I seem to do alright on them. My only issue would be what kind of condition are they in and how the mis-match might work. They haven't made the D207 for a while now so it could be quite old, and the D221 was always a budget tyre that was never intended to provide confidence inspiring feedback. If you're going to do mega miles commuting them leave them on and wear them out as quick as you can, if on the other hand you only want the bike for playtime then invest in some more appropriate rubber sooner rather than later.
