Default Fake pound coins

http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/28072010/389...nd-1-coin.html

Seems like it's a pretty big problem. I never really even considered that anyone would bother.

Just had a look at the five I have in my pocket, and one of them is clearly a fake now I'm looking for it. I think it would be a bit weird to hand just one in to the police station, though, I'd feel like I was giving the office some money for sweets.

I'll be checking my change now.

Yeah i can them going straight in the police christmas fund. If this was a of huge concern it would be headline news every day, and there would be campagins for it, so they aint oo worried. Also, i want a replacment pound. Its a ploy by the government to get money back in thier coffers i reckon.

I used to check our till for them on a regular basis and always found one. They're easy to spot when you know how.

Hah by paying people with fake ones that have to be returned to them f.o.c? I like it
Perhaps big problem is over-stating it, but I wonder if there's anywhere near that in fake paper money in circulation.

The one I have is rubbish! It's all too smooth, no definition to the pictures or lettering and the lettering around the sides falls off one edge. Plus the sides do not line up at all.

I have a Manx £1 in my wallet right now, it looks a bit dodgy but maybe their minting press doesn't press the coins as hard?

I handle a fair bit of small change in my job. The fakes are getting more common and the standard is getting better. Its only a matter of time before the self employed refuse to take them.

Years ago, I was a systems programmer for a company that manufactured cash counting machines and coin validators for vending machines etc.

We supplied a number of our counting machines to the royal mint for their quality control of coin blanks. I would have assumed in the 25 years since I did that work that somebody would have put in place similar technology in banks and large counting houses to weed out the fakes. Obviously not.

That would explain why I struggle sometimes to pay for parking. I always blamed the machine but I was probably using fake coins.
