Default Steering lock modification

Hello all,

well I have decided to stop playing with bikes in mud and give minitwins a try.

My (wife's actually Shhh) k6 pointy is now stripped for race prep with forks delivered to MCT. Anyway I was reading through an old post on race Prep from Coxxy:

'Dont forget the shark fin, stop locks on steering head so the hand cant be trapped against bodywork or fairing by the handlebars(we get picked up on this)'

Is this still a requirement and if so any advice on thread/bolt/drill sizes would be appreciated. With bike stripped it would be a good time to sort it before I get my forks back. Many more Q's to follow.

Cheers

It depends on the fairing you have fitted. Mine don't trap fingers/thumbs on full lock so I've left them as is so I can actually turn the bike round in the driveway without doing a 50 point turn.

If you have to do them, drill the stops on the yokes and put a thin (m3?) nut and bolt through, or drill and tap. Then pad the bolt out with washers to get clearance for your digits.

Before you drill, make sure the bolt head will touch the stop on the frame, and don't use a thick bolt as you are weakening the lock stop by drilling it anyway and lots snap in a crash.

Cheers,

I am ordering the AMS motorsport fairing. Looking at them I dont think I will have problems so will leave any drilling for now.

Next one: Side stand removal. The side stand safety switch contains two wires (green and black/white). Is it just a case of making a connection between the two somewhere along the run or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks again.

Yes, that's all it needs. Best to solder it...twisted wires come apart!

If your front fairing mount doesn't have the steering lock restrictors on it youc an buy two plastic (or rubber) black or white door stops from B&Q for less than a fiver.

Like these ones on Ebay

These can be fitted to the frame where the fork legs come close and make very effective steering restrictors. the plastic ones are slightly better than the rubber ones but the rubber ones offer more shock protection.

To fit simply use a drill and two self tappers or you can thread them if you have the gear.

Brilliant.
thats why I love these forums - cheap, sensible alternative ideas.
Rubber door stops bought.

Now how to explain to wife why I am drilling door stops to her pristine bike frame!!

cheers all

If you dont want to drill the frame just stick them on with super glue.

Stick them on as drilling frame or yokes isn't minitwin legal!

You won't have any problems with that, I have the same fairing on my curvy and it's brilliant, I am finding it a bit of a pig to fit the bellypan as I have crash bungs under it too.
My one came with a block mounted to the clock bracket, nicely padded with rubber bump stops and does the trick nicely.
