Default car insurance query

Hi Folks

just need a bit of guidance re car insurance.

the bird is learning to drive and I want to get her a cheap runabout to help learn and then for her to drive once (if lol) she passes her test.

I presume that initially that the car will need to be insured in my name with her as a named driver as she will not have a full licence....can anyone confirm this?

no, she can hold her own car insurance as a provisional license holder, provided she is over 16, she obviously cannot drive without a relevant experienced and license person in the car with L plates showing.

beware though found that when my wife past her test they put the policy price UP because she was now able to drive on her own...and this was deemed a higher risk

Same thing with kitkats daughter, she bought her car and insured it on a provisional licence with kitkat as a named driver. When she passed they put the insurance up.

Get a 4/5 door car. Might sound a strange thing, but when my parents got me my first car they were advised this and the insurance was about £100 different to if I would have had the 3 door version.

I now have a 3 door car and the insurance is more than than the 4 door version as it is 'classed' as a sporty type model, and therfore more of a risk!

She shouldn't be so much of a problem as a lad for insurance. My godson recently did his test, he has a Pug 107 (gp.1 insurance) and as a learner the cost was OK, it was registered to him and his ins policy (on a pay as you go basis while a learner).

When he passed his test it became effectively uninsurable. Ended up registering it in his Mum's name and she took out a policy with him as the named main driver (all above board, Aviva recommended this route). If he has an accident it doesn't reflect on her at all, they confirmed this since it was her big concern.

Depends what you want to pay for a "cheap" runabout, I'd thoroughly recommend an early Yaris (I still run my 10yr old one), or a cheaper (but not as good) alternative is a Micra, pretty reliable, durable and simple.

thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated.

as for which car...been thinking along the lines of polo/golf/civic/corsa but will have a look at yaris etc too.

was thinking of a diesel but they do seem to be pricier and not sure if she will do enough miles to make it worthwhile.

got to ask, how old is your bird?
If she's over 25 give NFU a ring, i know of somebody they are insuring after recently passing their test and it's cheeper than MY insurance with 3 years no claims.
they only insure older people though so younger drivers get royally _______ by them.
as for a good 1st car, an older Fiat Punto (pre grande crap), enginge is solid, performance wise it's great and i only ever found 1 common problem which is the wiper linkage is made out of toothpicks and breaks eventaully.
