I don't have a chain riveter and wondered if its possible to get the chain rivetted at a garage then fit it back at home. is it feasable to do this or am i best to just wait till my bikes back together and ride to the garage and get it changed there.
thanks |

You would need the swingarm off to fit a pre-rivetted chain.

No. The reason the chain is open is that it so it can be threaded through the frame, if it's endless the swingarm will need to be removed to fit it.

Assuming you have a split chain but the new chain came with a split link. I would put the split link on the chain and the rivet link in your pocket. Ride to the garage and ask them to swap it over. It might cost you a fiver or a tenner at the most.

I'd do that or buy/ lend the kit.

I bought a split link as a temp solution, its now been there for 5000 miles of me hammering it off the lights lol. Never got round to having it rivetted.

If it is an endless chain you will need to get it round the swinging arm as said. To remove the swingarm you also have to remove the exhaust, I have in the past got away with just removing the swingarm pivot and twisting it enough to get the chain through. IFIRC you will also need a special tool to undo the swingarm pivot.
In my opinion you will save a lot of time and effort just geting a soft-link chain and the tool to join it. The only advantage of removing the swinging arm is that you can clean and lubricate the swivel, on mine it was dry as a bone and some fresh grease realy helped the rear suspension. |
