Anyone in the telford ish area have an impact wrench they'd like to put to use tomorrow afternoon?
Stuck with the sprocket nut and i'm just not manly enough to do it ![]() otherwise would a 2ft breaker bar from halfords etc be enough? if anyone would let me play with their tool or let me watch them playing with their pole i'd be v grateful! ![]() |

a breaker bar is how i managed to get mine off, im guessing you mean front sprocket.
i had my dad press the rear brake down hard aswell, |

Don't use your bake to hold the rear wheel.
Put a piece of sturdy wood through the wheel above the swingarm. As you put the pressure on the breaker bar, the wood stops the wheel turning. Pete ![]() |

Yep - I bunged a chunk of wood on top of the swing arms and rested one of the spokes on it, then got a mate to sit on the bike with the brakes on (in case the wood broke) while I used a long lever on the nut.
Apparently, 4' of scaffold pole will either undo the nut or split the socket every time! Keith. Last edited by keith_d; 05-03-11 at 11:04 PM. |

Thanks all,
I read a lot of people have done the wood in wheel method but how do people manage to own all of this random stuff? Living in a first floor apartment makes it difficult to have random chunks of wood, scaffold poles etc lying around for these jobs that you do once every year or 2 ![]() Had an idea about hoover poles to fit over the wrench, but dont think mine or the parents are metal so its breaker bar time from wherever i get chance tomorrow prob halfords... and wouldnt like to return right angled hoover poles back to the parents either haha have bent the locking washer back to the best of my ability - looks to be clear but it is a little beat up already so was unsure for a while... so with that out the way its just my lack of masculinity that is the problem ![]() Off to pump some iron in preparation and will update tomorrow aft once hopefully sorted. Kind of just ripped the clutch mech out the way and it looked not much like the haynes pics so that'll be the next hurdle... all part of the education tho right !? ![]() |

I have loads of bits of wood from our old roof, come help yourself to whatever size and length you want. No scaffold poles but plenty scaffold planks.

Appreciated Ed i may take you up on a piece for future works as i just dont seem to have a life where useful random stuff comes my way!
Got the nut off with a 2ft breaker bar in the end, extended with a hoover pole and worked well ![]() ![]() only prob now is that clutch linkage is boogered ![]() |

Never never never use an impact wrench on your front sprocket nut! You will damage the bearings.
