Hi Guys,
LOVE the forum, have viewed a few times since having my SV and with limited knowledge of everything I am now here cap in hand asking for ideas ![]() Have had the bike since Feb this year (2001 SV650) and when I got it it originally it had a Datatool 3? I think, which annoyed the hell out of me at fill up times, setting itself and going off at a knats fart while getting off. Apart from that the bike was great. Riding back from a quick trip to Beeston with a pal and noticed my petrol light came on, fine, then when I came to the next junction, indicators did not work?!?! Got home, did nothing, next morning, all good. Wash and repeat, next day, same thing, but I pulled over and all power died, no dash lights, nothing! My pal removed the side panel and had a look around, no idea what for, put it back together, got me home. Next morning, sigh, did it again. Asked a neighbor to take a look and while he was there remove the alarm. He did and an hour later it was back. This was in March and shes been fine since. Yesterday, quick spin after work, pull up at roundabout with traffic lights (pet hate) and indicate to turn left, revs and speedo hit zero. Cancel indicator, all back?!?! Pull up in town to have a smoke and a moan to pal and bike will not start again, bump start, ride home, with zero revs if indicating and have a few beers. Well, up this morning and not that I thought it would, but bike will not start, as if battery is dead, lights on dash, just no go. Sorry for the essay guys, but I know next to nothing about electrics and can just manage to fill up and do an oil change! So i thought it best to give all the info I could. Has something died that has caned my battery? Is it somehting I can do or is it a garage job? (Neighbor is on hols for 2 weeks!) All help appreciated guys n gals, thanks in advance. |

Theres a number of things that spring to mind and it may be worth a search on here for wiring loom chafing and charging system, but you will really need to get a multimeter to make any sense of it.

Start at the loom, then the reg/rec, test the speedo drive. If that proves fruitless the most extreme case is the dash is fubar'ed

Yep, simlilarish to my last big fault, which was the loom chafing and causing an intermittent electrical fault, which eventually led to the battery not charging or at least fully. It got harder to start as the battery wouldn't just go flat, but slowly lost charge. Once it got really bad, the final ride to the garage, lost revs ect.
I ended up needing a battery, reg/rect/alternator, battery and a loom repair. Along with a couple of tyres, the bill was nearly £700!

Sounds like you have chafed your loom and something is shorting out against the frame, or you are under voltage. Get a loan of a multimeter, or buy this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...MULTIMETER.htm as a starting point.
Firstly get your battery on charge and then see if you can start the bike. Set the multimeter to 20v DC (10:30pm on that multimeter), and measure across your battery terminals without the engine running, then start your engine and measure again. Then rev to 2000, 4000 and 6000 revs and measure again each time. Tell us what the results are. The indicators probably don't mean anything unless the loom is chafed on the wires to the indicators. The indicators could just mean you have asked to draw more power than the bike can supply and the voltage at the ECU is dropping to an level where it can't function. If that's the case, you'd probably get the same symptoms if you flashed the headlights or beeped the horn, so that's a good test to see if it is a voltage problem or a loom problem. Try sticking high beam on and beeping horn at the same time and see what the bike does. Last edited by -Ralph-; 03-07-11 at 11:03 AM. |

Don't let this worry you, it'd only cost that if you had all of those problems and you took it to a main stealer. Reg/rec, battery, and loom are all problems you can fix yourself with parts from ebay. The problem with electrics is finding the fault.

Hi all,
Thanks a lot for the pointers. Pretty gutted it's blazing sun today and the bikes just got to sit there ![]() I loaned my battery charger to a mate and that's coming back today so at least I can get it on charge. I alos have an Argos 5 minutes from work so I can pick one of those meters up tomorrow too. I'll try the things suggested below and hopefully it will point me the right direction. I'm guessing if it is just chafing I can find the point and wrap it with tape? or will the wires have to be replaced? Thanks again guys, you've all been a big help. |

There are some well known chaffing points on the curvy.
Round the headstock.Under the rider seat where the seat securing bolts protrude into the loom.Under the pillion seat where the loom kinks around the rear subframe. Could also be a short in the switchgear somewhere.

Do you have any other electrical accessories on the bike you haven't told us about, ie: 12v socket, sat nav mount, heated grips, battery charging plug connectors, etc? |

No, nothing else electrical at all, the only addition was the alarm, but that was removed in March and has been fine until this issue.
I'm going to go and check the wires I can get to now while I wait for my charger and see if anything stands out. |
