Default Mudguard Law

Sorry if it's been brought up before,

I can't seem to find any concrete info. Regarding MOT's and the Law. I have found out that front mudguards are a legal requirement but are not an MOT requirement, Correct me if i'm wrong. What about rear mudguards? I put a tail tidy on my SV, essentially removing the snow shovel mudguard. would this now be technically illegal or would the number plate itself be sufficient? Are MOT's a problem with tail tidys ever? apart from the obvious no. plate lights and rear reflector?

THANKS!
