What are peoples opinions on MOT advisorys? There was 2 on my bike from the previous owner which I can't believe he got done yet on the last MOT I got none.
I've seen it with the car as well had an advisory for brake pads & then replaced them about 40k later when they were actually needed. Are they just something to keep an eye on or something to ignore, I suppose it depends on how conscientious the examiner is? any thoughts? |

I know of a tester that gave his own car an advisory.
I treat them as something to keep an eye on. Never had any for a bike. but had them for cars for things like play in steering arms. As in some but not excessive.

I take advisory to mean just that, the MOT tester advices I take a look at my brake pads. So I take a look then see if they actually need any altering, if they dont I carry on as is.

It's there for 2 reasons.
1 If you can't see something well enough to check it properly, and it looks as if it my need attention. MOT testers can't dismantle things to check.and they don't have specks on minimum disc thickness etc. 2 if a VOSA tester don't like something like a brake pipe 2 months down the line that was passed . If the tester noted it they are in the clear. It's there to point you at things that need an eye on them . But its all down to who is looking at it .

A less vigilant tester...that's all I can think of.

I had an advisory this year for "rear brake runout", which meant absolutely nothing to me. Quick trip to see Spannerman and he told me in English it usually means slightly warped disc and did the pedal feel a bit odd? He had a quick look and said it was so slight it was not a worry. Same on my car - advisory that the outside of the rear brake drum was corroded - they don't strip down to make sure the shoes and liner are OK so they're being cautious.
As above, the testers can just be covering themselves, or, more cynically, they could be touting for work by scaring people. To the mechanically challenged the advisory could sound worrying but personally I'd rather they were cautious and let me take steps to watch or check it out further.

Not an adivsory, this was a fail: I had a 46% brake imbalance on my car. At the time I didn't ask to see the test repeated, as at that percentage whenever I braked I should have been in the verge - but this wasn't happening. £300 later...
