Default SV650s Mpg ride

I have a 2000 sv650s with 45000 miles on the clock standard engine wise the only thing i have changed is Ive added lower fairings and a tinted screen i put exactly 1/2 a gallon in my tank and rode till it cut out tried various speeds until i achieved the best mpg figures i was doing this with several other bikes so im not a sad loner! going basically as slow as you could in hilly wales so abut 20 to 30 mph i ended up getting about 38 miles out of half a gallon before it came to a stop second time we did about 30 too 40 mph and i got 36 miles out of half a gallon third was about 30 to 40 again and i got the same 36 miles out of half a gallon last time round we stepped it up to 40 to 50 and i managed to squeeze 40 miles out of half a gallon yeah 80 mpg out of a 12 year old 45000 mile Sv i couldn't believe it i went from Shropshire to Llwyngyril rail station on 2 gallon of fuel all this ******** about changing your bike to new fuel injected apparently frugal bikes thwarted with a simple ride so simple its down to the way you ride it not what you ride it seems id love to do the same on a new sv c the difference if any i figured out on this ride that if i ride between 45 and 50 so aiming for 47 all the time thats like the bikes sweet spot where i got 80 to the gallon so just thought anyone trying to watch the pennies would be interested and id love to hear from anyone else's experiences if they have done anything similar or if anyone wants to no anything more then just ask away

alright dude i have been reading alot of articals on this sort of thing lately an its to do with what they call throttle losses if you keep the revs really low the engine has to work alot harder to actually function due to drag/restriction in the induction, but with the sv i have found if i ride it fairly quick an keep the revs around 5 or 6 k i seem to save alot of fuel

Just wont work in town, which is where most live. Too much stopping, starting and waiting. My MPG doing 50mph on the motorway is always impressive.

here are some figures for you. yes i'm a sad individual

27-05-2011 (normal Unleaded)
9.98ltr = 131.1 miles
131.1 / 9.98 x 4.546 = 59.71 MTG (13.13 MTL) (223.21 for 17 ltr)

29-05-2011 (normal Unleaded)
26.05ltr = 367.3 miles
367.3 / 26.05 x 4.546 = 64.09 MTG (14.09 MTL) (239.53 for 17 ltr)

03-06-2011 (normal Unleaded)
7.88ltr = 95.7 miles
95.7 / 7.88 x 4.546 = 55.02 MTG (12.14 MTL) (206.38 for 17 ltr)

05-06-2011 (normal Unleaded)
28.06ltr = 372.7 miles
372.7 / 28.06 x 4.546 = 60.38 MTG (13.28 MTL) (225.76 for 17 ltr)

11-06-2011 (normal Unleaded)
14.80ltr = 213.7 miles
213.7 / 14.80 x 4.546 = 65.64 MTG (14.44 MTL) (245.48 for 17 ltr)

19-06-2011 (normal Unleaded)
21.83ltr = 290.8 miles
290.8 / 21.83 x 4.546 = 60.55 MTG (13.32 MTL) (226.44 for 17 ltr)

26-06-2011 (normal Unleaded)
49.14ltr = 689.6 miles
689.6 / 49.14 x 4.546 = 63.79 MTG (14.03 MTL) (238.51 for 17 ltr)

03-07-2011 (normal Unleaded)
18.51ltr = 284 miles
284 / 18.51 x 4.546 = 69.74 MTG (15.34 MTL) (260.78 for 17 ltr)

10-07-2011 (normal Unleaded)
23.9ltr = 342.9 miles
342.9 / 23.9 x 4.546 = 65.22 MTG (14.34 MTL) (243.78 for 17 ltr)

27-07-2011 (normal Unleaded)
44.24ltr = 621.5 miles
621.5 / 44.24 x 4.546 = 63.86 MTG (14.04 MTL) (238.68 for 17 ltr)

08-08-2011 (normal Unleaded)
32.28ltr = 465.1 miles
465.1 / 32.28 x 4.546 = 65.50 MTG (14.40 MTL) (244.80 for 17 ltr)

14-08-2011 (normal Unleaded)
22.11ltr = 321.6 miles
321.6 / 22.11 x 4.546 = 66.12 MTG (14.55 MTL) (247.35 for 17 ltr)

21-08-2011 (normal Unleaded)
22.59ltr = 342.1 miles
342.1 / 22.59 x 4.546 = 68.84 MTG (15.14 MTL) (257.38 for 17 ltr)

04-09-2011 (normal Unleaded)
32.65ltr = 463.0 miles
463.0 / 32.65 x 4.546 = 64.46 MTG (14.18 MTL) (241.06 for 17 ltr)

25-09-2011 (normal Unleaded)
46.79ltr = 635.1 miles
635.1 / 46.79 x 4.546 = 61.70 MTG (13.57 MTL) (230.69 for 17 ltr)

Avarage (normal Unleaded)
400.80ltr = 5636.2 miles
5636.2 / 400.80 x 4.546 = 63.92 MTG (14.06 MTL) (239.02 for 17 ltr)

and i don't ride like a granddad with piles....

well the experiment i did i used exact measures and did mosty lane riding where its hilly so 80 to the gallon is what you would expect on a long duel carriageway or motorway goin pretty steady so if i was to do it again ill find a long duelcaridgway and ill put 1/4 gallon in and work it out at varing speeds but i think that 47 is the optimum for the sv 650s

in reply to loonytoon its about keeping the throttle as closed and as steady as posible in the optimum range and i think its about 3350rpm which seems to be around peak torque so im thinking peak torque is the optimum because its where the engine is most resitant to changes in gradiant so going up a hill its more likely to pull up it without changing the throttle position witch is wat your aiming for to acelerate before the hill so gradually gain speed up to about 50 55 then as you hit the hill maintain the throttle position and alow the bike to slow and change gear as necersary to keep it in the optimum rev range so around 3350 to 3650 ish you should then see 80 mpg + if your on good roads but in town you can aim to acelerate as slow as posible and change gear about 3500 first you can change about 2800 and then the rest of the gears aim for 3500 ish and i was getting about 37 miles from half a gallon of fuel doing that mixed with abit of verry hilly country lanes so i recon 70 mpg is achiveable in and around town if you dont stop too much and try not to use the brakes

Sounds pretty unscientific to me!

I get 60mpg pretty much all the time so I'm happy.

I'd agree but don't let the revs drop so much it's lumping along like a bugger either.

Peak torque is way above 3000rpm but that seems to be around the lowest smooth speed.

Fuel economy is all about smoothness, building up momentum takes expensive fuel so try not to lose it by braking. Gently slow for red lights and roundabouts in advance so you have a good chance of holding onto most of your speed through them.

On A roads sticking to 60mph through Wales I managed 57mpg on my modified naked one. On the outward leg I averaged 75mph on some of the B roads, a little bit more on the open stretches and got 28mpg. Full tank in 101 miles.
