Default websites loading weirdly

Hi all,

Am having this issue on a number of machines at work.
Basically, a few websites - particularly facebook and evilbay - load up as plain white background with a coloumn of text down the left hand side and take an absolute age to load. It seems like a MIME problem but nothing's been changed on our setup.
I get the problem on firefox 8.0.1 (latest version) and it doesn't seem to do it in IE8 on my PC. On other PCs, websites wont load/load realllly slowly both in IE and FF.
The problem is also on a mac running safari and he says firefox is even worse. On the mac, it just hangs and takes ages to connect to certain websites, if it connects at all.
I've changed DNS settings to google ones to check - same result. Cleared caches and cookies - same result. Reinstalled firefox - same result. Restarted firebrick and router - same result...
Odd that it happens on the mac too...

Bit of network info:
12MB BT broadband
Phillips router - couple of years old now but works fine (I think)
firebrick hardware firewall
managed switches

Sooooo.... I'm out of ideas! Anyone any clue?

Cheers,
Dave

I think it was a weekend thing as I had the same problem with FF after the update , even with IE as well with the same pages . I think there was a Java update on friday that may have lead to this issue . Everything seems tickety-boo now for me though .

Add Facebook and eBay to the Firebrick ban list and everyone will get a uniform "Site Blocked by Admin" message and productivity will go up.

That will be £100 for the IT Consultation thanks

wish I could Dave...

Java is up to date too..

Wondering about something on the network.
When I first started here, I inherited the network and a couple of strange things that I've never been able to change.
Main thing is the IP range of this place is weird - set to 192.42.172.X internally and everyone on static. I'm wondering if maybe the formatting (CSS) part of either FB, Ebay, etc. websites are coming down from a loctation that has the same IP and it's getting blocked. Why it would work on some computers and not others though is still a mystery.

I'm going to test it with a laptop plugged straight into the router and an IP set to 192.168.0.X anyhoo

seems to have come back OK now...
Hmmm - didn't change anything! Maybe it's something outside - a rat chewing through a cable or something!

Uncanny, I was about to suggest to check for rats chewing through the interweb

Did you try turning it off and then on again? Failing that, use the big hammer that should be located on your desk top.

Next to the gaffa tape (good for rat bitten interweb cables)
