Pointies have a taller gearing so its quite hard unless off a crest or with someone on the back. Just ride it through second and change up whilst wheelieng, thats the proper way to do it.

Never tried a third gear wheelie, but I can tell you my SV would just hover the front wheel about an inch off the tarmac in third gear, just off power on full throttle as it passed into the 7-8000 revs zone where it starts to pull properly. Especially with the wife on the back.

If your talking wheelies, 3rd gear on a SV (on Std gearing) is the front hovering (as Ralph said). Doing a wheelie in 3rd gear would be using the clutch and full throttle pulling back hard on the bars. Anyways power wheelies are far more fun The SV can be make to pick the front up by up'ing the gearing at the back (and upping the acceleration and reducing top speed), or fitting a rock hard shock (not allowing the back to squat) and pulling back on the bars The world wheelie championship lads aim to hold the revs 500-1000 rpm off the limiter to do 1km, like so http://youtu.be/DCa-F1fRGR0
Edit: here's better vid of my explanation http://youtu.be/10r8UHIE4Sg
