Hi everyone, I am new on here, I originally started over on another bike forum for some research which has now lead me here.

I am building a kart with an SV650 engine on it to drag race, its been done before as can be seen/heard below:

I am getting a carbed SV650 working engine from a bike being broken, which comes with EVERYTHING, basically all the engine plus ancilaries I am taking meaning that the engine can be run outside of the bike - including radiators and the wiring for the ignition etc meaning it 'just' a case of mounting the engine onto the kart frame, moving the seat over slightly as normal for the 250cc superkarts and get the sprockets correct.

I thought I best join the forum in case I need any help with the mechanical aspects to the engine, I have seen a quite a few rebuild videos of 2 stroke engines (eg the YZ250 engine) but havn't seen a video guide for the SV650 although I now have manuals for any issues.

Just thought I would say hi before asking any questions, I have researching the engine a bit already and I am aware of the issue with the cam chain tensions and how rubbish the OEM exhaust sounds!

I was looking at fitting a CR250 engine to the kart, but then found that a v twin engine was only slightly wider, made better power, was easier to tune (a la changing cams) and the engine would last more than 50 hours of use before needing a fresh piston

Anyhow, I will post up photos of the project etc and some specs of what I plan to do, but thought I best say hi!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I got the idea from the 'Gixxerkarts' which have a GSXR 600 engine mounted behind on an extended frame:

I don't have a trailer and don't plan to get one, but the standard kart chassis fits in the boot of my Volvo estate, and I live an hour from Santapod where I usually race my RX7, this kart will probably be faster looking at the 1/4 mile times of the SV650 though! Plus I can change the gearing on the front and rear sprockets - need to check the chain pitch on the front sprocket, but might just get a standard kart front sprocket and mod to fit the SV650 engine.

Anyway, I am planning on the SV650 engine due to the fact it should fit fine onto the OEM location for the kart engine AND also fit into the boot of my car.

Fitting an inline 4 bike engine looks a bit unstable:

I also don't have the money to build a GSXR1000 with nitrous kart (or indeed the life insurance):

So I have gone for an awesome sounded engine being the SV650 which is common and the parts seem pretty cheap

Holy cr4p! Those karts are mental!! I am guessing you mounted the engine behind you and not to the right...?

Please post pics when you can, I would love to see it as I am sure many others would too

Im mounting the engine in the OEM position on the right and offset the seat.

With the 250cc superkarts their 2 cylinder engine is mounted there and the seat is slighlty offset - to balance the weight of the engine, the reason why I am going for an SV650 rather than say a CBR600 is the fact it is a V twin, so only 2 cylinders across rather than 4, you can see what I mean from these superkarts:

There are even laydown endurance karts lol

The 250cc superkarts run at around 70-90bhp from a 2 cylinder 2 stroke, this is what superkarts look like when racing around the isle of Man @ 150 mph

Not sure, they don't have harnesses in karts, I guess the same question can be put to coming off at 150mph on a bike, except you have further to fall on a bike!
