Default moving on from starting probs 17-1-12

Hi People,

I posted on the 17th that I was having a depressing time with my SV 650 due to starting problems, I have changed the battery, regulator and starter solenoid... which is the part I thought was to blame due to the machine gun clicking sound coming from it, anyhow after all the changes it was still crap so I wrote on the forum and had some replies kindly given by Mark..Rictus01, that I have actioned on the bike but I am afraid to no avail, the bike will still start first time when jumped and will click away for hours if no other form of power is supplied.
Firstly can I install a heavier amp battery to compensate for this annoying clicking to be rectified or is there some other underlying problem that should be looked at first, all replies will be welcome and so you know the bike is downstairs half stripped to action any possible answers,
With fingers crossed,
Ian.

When you jump it from a big battery where do you connect the cables? If you connect them straight to the bike battery terminals Ive got no idea, but if you connect say the neg to the frame or engine this would suggest you have poor earthing somewhere between battery and engine block.Ive had a bad earth to engine. There is an earth wire that connects right behind the engine where you cant see it and mine was all crudded up.

Sounds more likely to be your starter motor drawing a huge restistance. drop it off and check it.

battery off it's holding 12.56 volts no problem, battery on and it starts going down at an alarming rate per second and will not start the bike.... something is taking the power and using it where it shouldn't, or is it a bad earth somewhere ?

Also the lights when turned on dim dramatically and the indicator barely has the power to flash, I officially hate electrics and their stupid tight hiding places.

Check the wiring loom as it passes around the headsock and frame, it could be frayed and shorting somewhere. This would explain the mahoosive power drain when the battery is connected.

Perhaps wrong but repeating a previous post, I have had a clicking and fail to start. It was soon after rebuliding and replacing the engine into the bike, and happened when we first tried to start it. Used jump leads from other batteries etc still wouldn't go, then spotted the earth had not been reattached to the engine (maybe frame, cant remember), so i'd go with no earthed properly!...

Thank you so much for all your replies, I read the Nadine from Bristol guide... if you haven't seen it find it , Blue SV is a saint, anyhow I will try and verify that it is a bad earth simply because that is prime suspect and get back with results, cheers, Ian.

Here is Nadines story, absolutely brilliant.

I have not been able to ride my SV since early november last year because...well nobody really knows what is wrong. I am so frustrated because I haven't got the money to bring it to a garage and everybody I know who could repair her did not know any solution either. I live next to uni, which is very convenient for my final year, but apart from that, there is nothing around and I end up spending an aweful lot of money on bloody busfares for busses that never turn up. And I miss my bike.

My question is therefore, if there is any SV rider on this forum that lives in Bristol and has time to help me. i would rather pay some of you guys for their inconvenience and effort instead of some garage that will charge me however many hours of work just to search for the error, because to be honest, all I can say is that the battery does not charge.

I know you guys are all very helpful and I have asked questions on this forum before, but I am afraid I have to admit that I am a stupid girl, and advice such as exchange the X and the Y and bridge this with that and measure the Voltage here and there and if it is more than 14 and if it is less than 12...and so on... does not help me at all but drives me insane! I just cannot put all your helpful advise into practise, hence the call for somebody to come around and have a look.

Here is the problem as far as I can narrow it down: One day, I drove to a tyre place 10 mintues from my house, my SV would not start anymore. The place was so kind to put it on charge for me while they fixed a new tyre, on the way back I went up and down the M32 with high speed - next day, the bike won't start.

So I go and buy a new battery (money, money, money) and three days later - the bike won't start. So somebody tells me that the regulator/rectifyer or what ever often stop working on SVs. ~So I buy a new one of these, recharge the battery, aaaaaaand - three days later I have the same problem. Then I get lots of advise on "it could be the altenator, or the wiring or the etc". But I am out of money that I spend for parts I didn't even need!

I stopped using my bike now because even when it is charged, it just does not feel right to ride it. It feels as if I am constantly working against something and the exhaust constantly bangs. Someone told me that is because the sparks are too week.

I am sorry for this long email, but I had to explain my frustration. I would be ever so greatful if somebody would be able to visit me in Bristol and point out to me what it is that needs to be done or maybe even do it themselves. Like I said, I'd rather pay somebody who knows what they are doing and does not rip me off.

Thank you ever so much for your pacience - and please - no highly technical jargon anymore, I don't get it...

All the best,
Nadine

Why start another thread? Put it in same thread or get mod to merge the 2 so we can read what original problem is and what you have done about it...

It sounds like a knackered battery.

Hi Chris, you were part of the Nadine story too, sorry I didn't merge the stories but as a newbie I didn't know I could, as for the battery it is brand new Dec, and holding a full 12.46v when off the bike, do you think that is a problematic battery ?

Have a read through this fault finder if you have a multimeter to hand. Check area where seat bolts are as they can rub on the loom and cause problems. hth
