Applying for tough jobs

I applied for a job 5 minutes ago on jobsite. The pay is massive and the experience requirements are about twice what I have. I'd say I'm 60% qualified, and should really be earning about 60% of what they're offering really. So I'm attempting to jump up the ladder, like a frog on crack whose been shot up the **** with a 50cal.

I stressed my massive enthusiasm for the role (sounds cool as fudge) and my superhuman ability to learn new things, so I can only hope they invite me to an interview and then I wow them with my charm and perhaps some breakdancing like minimorecambe's hedgehog.

What do people think about this kind of thing? I mean, should people try to get jobs they're not fully qualified for, so long as they're honest? Or should we do it properly and find jobs that will give us the experience before we try for the tougher jobs? Am I being a cheeky fekker?

It's very rare I am enthusiastic about a job .... or anything at all really, so I felt I couldn't pass up at least having a punt on this. Anyway, just needed to rant, so when I get ignored I can at least have a forum record as proof that I tried.

Yes! They talk the job up in the advert same as you talk yourself up. My job description when I applied for it was (no joke) 2 sheets of A4, with bullet points covering everything the company does. When I first signed up, it was easier than my old job! A few years on I do everything on that list and then some

that sentence sums up a major part of the working population of the UK and one of the reasons everything is going to pot. people doing jobs that they are not capable of doing and making a mess.

i'm sorry but some people work hard and study to get higher up the ladder.

Always worth a punt, and there's nowt wrong with showing ambition and enthusiasm.

All being well I'll be interviewing in a few weeks time and I don't expect any of the candidates to pass the technical test. But I'm looking for ambition, enthusiasm and a record of being able to learn.

Problem is with applying for jobs is that you first have to go through an agency, they will receive hundreds of CVs and maybe forward 5 to the employer. They will just read the first page of your CV and if you aren't already doing a similar job it will be filed in the bin.

That's my experience anyway.

TBH Bib I'd say that's more to do with the interviewer failing to select the right person... blame it on the mgt

Kind of my thoughts, but I suppose it's up to the interviewer to decide. If I'm being open and honest, then if they choose me over someone more qualified, they must see something else in me. Perhaps it's potential, or perhaps it's that "I will kill your whole family" look.

I totally agree though, when people lie about their qualifications and then screw the job up when they get it, that aint right. Sounds like yours is a voice of experience talking.

I'm hoping that won't happen. My current job looks ok compared to their job description, just missing a few skills. I think I just need to make it to the interview, then like Bri said, I will be bouncing off the walls with enthusiasm, and they will have no choice to employ me, as an office clown if nothing else.

As Bri say's the problem's the way the companies are run -people should be encouraged to think on their feet and be prepared to work damn hard to make things work.
My uncle got a job that 'fluent in French' was an essential requirement...he went to the interview put on a French accent and got the job. His placement in France didn't last long but he's now one of the top professionals in his field as published last year. And he's minted the lucky get!

We've (previously!) employed many, many 'highly qualified' people who must be great in a job that consists solely of passing exams unfortunately they've not been much use on the job.

Go to the interview, show your enthusiasm and capacity for the job and if you keep that enthusiasm after getting it you can't go wrong.

When I applied for my current job it was pretty much double my previous salary... if you don't ask, you don't get

I've applied for two jobs this week that I'm more than capable of doing that pay £100k+... I had the client for one of them ring me up saying they would love to have me in for an interview, but as my current employer provides them with 'stuff' they have a legal contract with them not to poach staff... I didn't know who the client for the job was until they called, if I'd have known I would have knew it was pointless applying.

You have to apply though... sooner or later you'll get lucky and someone will give you a chance.
