Question Help!!! Organising a bike run

Hi guys,

ne advice is appreciated!!

I'm currently working on a route (approx 90miles) for a charity bike poker run in N.Ireland for Marie Curie this summer.

I have been told that i must inform the parades commision and police. Do I need some form of public liability insurance or anything like that? Ne thing i must/must not do??

Thanks
Ricky

I'm well out of practice on big runs, so this is from memory and at least 20 years old, but I believe if an event is publicly organised, you need PLI, we also had a form to submit to the local council and police on the route and expected attendence as well as the start and end location/ parking provision and so forth, we had a comity so the jobs were divided, so I'm unsure what is exactly involved, but it might be wise to contact the local authorities for advice as there maybe local bylaws as well as general rules to be followed.

Oh and I seem to remember there was a cost involved in the police in regard to traffic management at some point, but you'd need to look into that ( the preposed route was also changed before being approved one year).

Cheers Mark

there is a legal difference to a sponsored/charity event and a private one where any proceeds are donated to charity, I would imagine the latter could be arranged without PLI, but the former would need to be public to attract sponsorship.

I don't know what you'd "get away with", I guess that would depend on how big it was, but they tend to have all sorts of rules if money is involved.
