I've been a bit greedy this year and had a few jobs. Since leaving my last place i currently don't know what i want to do or where i want to be right now. what i know is i want good pay, good job, and a life outside of work.
Where i am currently: Mon-Fri, 9-6 16k PA plus commission, it's in IT and 4.6 miles from where i live. I've only been there a week so far (i know it's not a great amount of time to judge a job in) however i feel out of touch as i am not an IT geek or really into it. The job i've been offered: Mon-Fri 8-6, alternate Saturdays 8-4. 17k PA plus commission, automotive spares, only 8 miles from where i live. I prefer this job as it is something of interest to me and i am knowledgeable about the industry and products. The hours don't fuss me as it means i dodge the rush hour traffic, the odd Saturday i don't mind either. I've only got my bills to pay, both jobs cover them quite easily on the basic wage. The question i'm asking is . . . . . .

I'd rather much be happier in a job seeing as you spend half your life at work.

Not worth staying if you are not happy & you have an option to move on.

I put 'stay' mate. You want a life outside of work, but you're thinking about swapping to a job with a longer working day and compulsory saturday work. Unless you really like the sound of this new job, I'd say hold on for something better. Only you can decide though. Just think of all those Saturday ride outs you're gonna miss if you have to work. Sods law we'll be going out every time you're working.

If you're not really into IT and prefer the sound of the other job, then I would jump ship. No point doing a job that you dont enjoy. Also remember IT is not a 9 - 5 job, never was, never has been.
The only thing to consider perhaps is which one has the best long term prospects ?

I said stay, but this might be a factor of not having worked in a salary + commission world - a grand doesn't sound like a lot of money for the extra hours.

TBH the extra money isn't a persuasion factor for me. It's feeling happy in a job that is important to me. I'd feel a lot more comfortable & happy in a job where i already have knowledge of the product. The hours are what they are and don't really affect me right now, seeing as i don't have many plans or things going on right now. It means less time to spend my hard earned wonga, and more shiny bits for the bike!

Go for the job that makes you want to get up in the morning. I am a bit of a sad muppet, but I love my job, I really enjoy going to work each day, and trust me I have done jobs that I don't enjoy. If you are doing a job you enjoy you are more positive about life and therefore everything seems better.

It's true, she loves her job! On your situation daddyjob, if you are considering it seriously enough to ask as feckwits, be honest, you already know the answer - you just want us to tell you it's alright.
Go and get the new job |
