Default Embarrassing near misses...

C'mon...own up.

What has been your most embarrassing near miss?

Leaving your axle nuts loose after aligning your rear wheel?

Not tightening your steering stem nut after doing some work?

Riding off without your lid on and, thinking there's something 'different' about your ride, but not realising what it is until you're on a dual carriageway?

Or...what I did this morning which was set off for work, fill up with petrol, get a few miles down the road and stop at the lights just before the M-way and happen to look down to the right and notice your right leg and most of the bike is covered in engine oil....and the oil cap is nowhere to be seen

Anyone better that?

I was doing some work on my bike the other day, put it all back together again then just as I was about to leave the shed saw the spark plug still lying on the workbench, that was a bit annoying.

C'mon guys...these aren't really near misses...although the glasses one is potentially borderline.

About 20 years ago did the brakes on gf's car, I got a phone call half way through. A couple of weeks later while I was away in the States she calls me, a wheel's come off the car and she's done a 180 on a busy dual carriageway. God knows why she married me after that.... must be mad.

How about forgetting to tighten the front caliper bolts on my VT125 after servicing them!!!!

Didn't realise till about 30 miles along with a rattle from the front end, one of the bolts was on its last thread! LOL

My back wheel on my job bike nearly fell off whilst escorting the Manchester City team coach to a match.

Bolts only done finger tight and they worked loose.

Not embarrassing for me, just the spanner monkey who had to come fix it.

Not bike related.

I acquired a 9mm pistol that had a broken the firing pin that had been removed. So I had to fabricate one from scratch. the design is such that the momentum of striking the firing pin causes it to travel to hit the primer of the round in the breech. Just pushing the pin would not move it far enough.

So I had put a old case in and was using it to size my work. But an old round has a dent in the primer so as a final check I put a live one in with a bit of micrometer blue on it to check the pin did not push out simply by the hammer resting on the end of the pin. Happy with my work, I knocked in the retaining pin and gave it a squeeze having forgotten what I had left in. Missed my left ear by millimeters and made a hole in the garage cupboard . Whoops.
