Morning all,
I've had the idea to finally mount my TV to the wall over a small alcove that we have. I picked up a bracket yesterday but as I got it home noticed it isn't long enough to span the gap. In my simple mind I can span the gap with some sturdy board and bolt the bracket to the board. Is this correct and what kind of board am I best with? I'm currently thinking 18mm ply but I'm open to suggestions. I'll attach a picture, the opening is 59cm wide and the bracket is 45 ( yes I know, I should've bought the right bracket in the first place but here we are. The walls are strong so holding the board won't be a problem, the TV is 42 Inch and not too heavy TBH. ![]() I'd like to get this sorted this weekend so quick replies preferred please. Thanks in advance! |

Brett, are you planning on putting the plywood across the front of the alcove or cut it to fit in the arch so it sits flush?
If you're putting across the front then it's easy, just put some 3 inch no10 screws in a few places and that sucker ain't going nowhere. If you're cutting it in, then obviously you have to mount some battens inside the alcove to attach the board to so it sits flush. Another option is to fit two lengths of 3x1 timber horizontially across the front, space them out a bit so it catches the footprint of the bracket, cut them to length so the tv perimeter hides them, job done ![]() |

Specialone, you know me, simple and effective. No pretence at nice looking LOL
I was just gonna slap it across the front and make sure it was smaller than the TV ![]() I'm liking the two strips of timber idea though, easier to get and transport. Thanks! (The org is ace!) Last edited by Brettus; 24-02-13 at 10:41 AM. |

Had a momentary panic, I remember taking the picture after I'd just stumbled downstairs in my pyjamas but then re-read your post

Just a quick update for closure on this (and for gratitude for the quick and solid advice)
All done and dusted (well hoovered) This was the before pic: (it's actually mid process hence why everything is everywhere but it was the closest to before I could get without tidying it all back up just for a picture.) ![]() And the after shot: ![]() Still a lot of cable tidying/management to do but the main thing is it is up and on the wall now and was still there when I came down this morning ![]() I forgot to snap a pic of the boards on the wall but I followed Specialone's advice and 2 lengths of 3x1. I could've cut them down in length a bit but I felt more secure leaving them longer (they don't show around the edge until you get close and even trimmed down they would still be seen. I used some metal sheath wall anchors for the boards and 4 40mm bolts to secure the bracket to the boards, along with 4x 1" screws I'd got (just to be sure) as there were plenty of attachment points. Thanks for the help! Last edited by Brettus; 25-02-13 at 08:59 AM. |

Get it straightened up. I hate wonky things on walls!
