Default K&N air filter question

Just received a K&N air filter in the post today. I'll be doing a snorkelectomy on it before installing with my Ivan's jet kit. Weirdly though, when I opened the packaging and had a look at the filter there seems to be a piece of metal wire inside the filter. It looks like it is actually attached to the plastic base:

I can't imagine it's supposed to be there, but the fact it's attached is a bit odd. Anyone seen anything like this before?

To me, that looks like it's been badly made and contaminated.

Send it back, ask for a replacement.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Will be on the phone to the seller in the morning.

Yep agreed.

If I may ask, what exactly does a Jet Kit do? Does it make it super fast?

for carby bikes, alters the mixture for optimum running when something performance wise is changed.

out of interest mine didn't need rejetting after a K&N

Ha, if only the term 'jet'was literal

As said above, the kit alters the fuelling to compensate for more air. The standard mains jets on a carbed SV is too small when you add more air and a better flowing exhaust system into the equation.

With Ivan's jet kit it requires you open up the top of the K&N with a Dremmel or similar to allow even more air. Lucky I noticed the fault with the filter before I cut it

I had my Curvy jetted and K&N'd with a race exhaust, bike was a bit quicker and more responsive but fuel economy suffered massively, right down to 30-35mpg.

Have recently put stock carbs, filter and exhaust back on and my MPG is right back up to 52mpg.

If your commuting I wouldn't do it again.

I've got a K&N, noisy full system, and even the cam swap, and if it's set up properly there's no problem, I get 55+mpg and it's not slow. If you just add the filter and/or pipe you can ride it but it'll be a bit lean, so more noise but not really any more go. Just sticking some bigger jets in isn't going to necessarily be right, might be less wrong, might be moreso, that's what a dyno is for.

Well seller refunded item without any issues and I purchased another one elsewhere.

Have to say though, not very impressed with K&N's quality control, as this one had a bit of plastic floating around in it and the moulding is a bit rough. I wish BMC's were more readily available in the UK.
