Hi fellow bike lovers.
I've had yet another problem with my 02 curvy (there's definitely a pattern emerging for me here..). I was riding alond and the lights went dim, then when I stopped it wouldn't start, I asked someone for a jump but to no avail, I managed to find someone to push me and we got it going. Then avout 6 miles later it died again, after a while I managed (with some help from a stranger) to bump it again but it died for good a couple of miles down the road and there was no getting it started again... When i try to start it the starter unit (I don't know what it's called but it's just in front of the battery with a clear ish white cap and 2 hefty wires coming out of it) is clicking but it's bot actually turning over. This makes it seem like a starter motor/unit problem but the fact that it's been randomly dying makes it seem like it's something else. I've been advised to check parts with a multimeter but most of the checks that have been suggested require the bike to be running (for testing the rectifier though) Please help, I need my bike as it's my only means of transport... |

Starter relay clicking normally means flat battery which you can check the voltage of with your meter then post up the result for further diagnosis. Oh and the main fuse lives in the starter relay too. HTH
If its a flat battery charge it up then run through this Fault Finder Guide which is quite good and not to hard to follow.

I forgot to say that I already looked at the voltage on the battery, it was 11.26v. A bit low but I'd expect it to still be enough.
I checked the relay fuse and it hasn't blown. None of the fuses have in fact. |

That sounds low enough to be a problem to me.

Battery too low needs to be 12.5 ish get it charged/started then run your tests HTH. The clever bods will be along soon im sure.

Sounds like the rectifier has failed and the battery is running the bike , that would explain why the lights went dim and the battery voltage is now 11.25 volts . Once the battery is charger and the bike is running again check the rectifier charging voltage with the engine running . Should be around 13 volts at tick over and around 13.5-14 volts at 4k revs . This will confirm if the regulator/rectifier is working or not . If the voltage is around 15 volts or more higher it will also confirm that the rectifier is no good .

Ok, thanks very much for that info!
I'll try and charge the battery asap, see if I can get it running then test it. If it is the rectifier it'll be very ironic because a year ago I had a ZXR400 that blew the rectifier and it took the battery and the ECU with it... if it's the rectifier this time I really hope it hasn't blown the ECU too.. |

How old is the battery mate ? I had a similar problem with my 2000 curvy. I had to buy a new battery and that solved it for 2 weeks before battery was drained again, then i replaced the reg/rec and touch wood it's been fine since.
I managed to get an after market one for about £50 brand new delivered, i will try and fine the link on ebay ! edit: Link is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-SV6...item4612d76eb5 It says 98-01 but that is wrong ! it will be 99-02 mate Last edited by zippie01; 28-02-14 at 09:18 PM. |
