Hi,
How important is it to do the valve clearence on my sv650 2005 model. I bought it when it had 24k on the clock and now it is 28k and don't think it was done before or maybe it was but again not sure. according to the haynes book it should be done every 15k, should I just do it anyway and check it to ensure it is all good ? Thanks |

Do it anyway, only takes around an hour, from getting your tools out to putting them away again and having a brew too.

thanks , when I do it , and lets assume I have to adjust it which means taking the cams off. this in turn mean taking the timing chain etc all off. how would you go about marking them to ensure a right timing when put back in?
I don't want any crash or bang from piston to valve ![]() |

I'd really suggest you pick up a Haynes or similar. It's not too hard to do, there are timing marks on the cams and on the alternator. Checking is quite simple though dropping the radiator off or out of the way helps access.
Cam chain doesn't need to come out. Jambo Sent without a real keyboard

many thanks
![]() what happens if those marks are not there. basically I am interested to know how manufacture does it without marks which then introduces the marks. I guess it is using dial gauge and finding where the piston is so they can then adjust the cam lobes!! |

The marks are easily seen on the cam sprockets, however when working on an engine that has no, or sometimes multiple confusing marks, I will mark the crank, cam sprockets and the chain to make sure it goes back together correctly. I use a silver felt tip or Tippex.
