Default Will my clutch cable go "snap!" soon?

Well, a while back my clutch was taking closer and closer to the handlebar grip, so I adjusted it myself. I made a small error when I adjusted the slack my the clutch lever gear and part of the clutch cable got caught in that small gap of the gear adjustment dial. I recall 2 strands of the cable broke.

It seems I now need to adjust the cable bite point again, as its taking closer to the handlebar again. Also, slight clicking sensation as you pull it is...which I suspect is the frayed cable.

Question is...roughly how long until it snaps? Do I adjust the cable and ride for the next week, or just get the replacement and replace the clutch cable? I'm thinking the latter...

Latter, for the price of it its not worth the worry, FYI I dont think the clicking is the frayed cable, I believe it has something to do with the worm gear / lifter

Ok thanks, saw a thread about someone cleaning the worm gear and re-greasing and it made the bike feel like new. Will make sure I do the same when I change the cable.

If you take the worm gear apart, watch out the tiny loose bearings inside it. Also worthy of some work is the push rod that comes out of the back of the worm gear, this can corrode and wear the seal as it enters the engine. A going over with wire wool will keep it fresh.

dont take the wormgear apart. just take it off and blast it out with brake cleaner or spray degreaser then spray white grease with silicone/teflon down there. i spent the best part of an hour trying to assemble it again. its the grit and chain lube sticking to it that turns into grinding paste that causes all the hassle.

if your changing the clutch cable remember there is a locking tab on the lifter arm that needs to be bent back before you can remove the cable nipple do this first before anything. once you have the cable end out then undo the long adjuster nut at the engine end then slacken off the adjuster at the bar end then remove the bar end nipple form the lever. once you have done that remove the long adjuster from the engine end then cable tie the top of the new clutch cable to the bottom end of the old cable (lay the cables beside each other to cable tie) then just pull the new cable through by pushing the new cable and pulling the old one at the same time (feeding through).

oohhh and any fraying of the clutch cable will result in it snapping when you least expect it.

Absolutely. At the worst possible moment in the worse possible location. Been there, done that.
