Default Make camp or move on ??

Right, throwing the whole thing open for everybody to air thier views:

I want to know if you would prefer to "make camp" in one place, then doing trips out from there, which means very limited luggage but limitations on where we go, or......

Become "2 wheeled nomads" for a few days, which means we can go from A to B to C etc, but it also has the drawback of finding more hotels and always carrying your luggage.

I know which I prefer, but I want your views.....

Please bear in mind, which ever we do, we will probably be covering in excess of 400Km per day.

What made the idea attractive Steve was the fact that we'd be based somewhere and you had a choice of what you did, with who and where you go.

A mad constant dash doesn't figure highly on my agenda and is one of the reasons I didn't come this year. Though I do appreciate that others might feel otherwise.

I can see both points of view, if I had my way we would have somebody in a "support vehicle" carrying all the luggage and some spares, so we could have the benefit of both.

But, as they say, "you've got 2 chances of that happening, slim and none, and slim just left town...."

I would be interested to know who voted on the poll but didn't leave a message If your gonna vote, you must have a reson why, so say so.

Make camp. I thought the whole idea was to enjoy a 400 Km ride a day, and carrying extra weight in the shape lugagge doesn't fit that idea IMHO. There is also the fact that is always good to have a fixed point, a way point is not as fixed a a whole town. If you get lost you can always ask how to get back to that town.

Just my 2 cents.

Got to admit that it was good fun keeping on the move and discovering new places. And the luggage hardly made any difference at all in the end. But I can see the advantage of staying in one place. No need to worry about accommodation (although it wasn't a problem) for a start!

How many days are we thinking of camping for? Don't forget that we'll need a variety of roads to do (don't want to be doing the same ones all the time unless they are dribble inducing) as well as a variety of hostelries to refuel at!

I'd be more interested in having a base camp and go from there. I'm sure we can find more routes to do than we will have time for from a single base.

Having a base means that you can keep your kit in some sort of order, enjoy the roads without excess luggage and not have to worry about accomodation at the end of the day.

i would prefer a base camp, possibly near a decent sized town to do some drinking in the evening, also to let the dorris off if she don't feel like the ride that day, the idea of a base camp is good as it means that all your belongings are relativly safe and if you sling it your bags dont empty all over the roads.
also,
what kind of time are we spending away if its a fair while maybe have two bases, one for the first two days or so and one for the remainder, just a thought

It's a hard one, but throwing all our stuff down and shooting off in to the mountains sounds like fun

I want to do a trip where we go from one place to another, but in this instance having a base camp sounds like the fairest idea for all.

Looking forward to it :P
