First of all I'm new so.....Hello.
I'm after some advice, I have an unfaired 53 plate model SV650 and a currently have a quite warped break disc on the front. Normally this would be covered by warranty but I don't know for sure if it was done in a minor off I had. Last November (2003) while coming of an ASDA in Leeds the back end slid away from me as the surface was very icy and I fell on my right side (the side of the warped disc) at about 15mph, shortly after I took the bike back to the dealer who I bought it from, told them what happened and asked them to check the bike over, other than a few scrapes and slightly bent handlebars they said it was fine and charged me £50. I felt knocking through the front so when it went for it's 4000 mile service about 3 months later I asked them to check the front they again said it was fine. I have since been to a different dealer who showed me it defiantly was warped. As break discs aren't cheap I want it done under warranty but I'm not sure what to say to them, the dealer that showed me it was warped said should replace the damaged radiator cap, indicator and bar end weight and deny all knowledge of the spill but my sister recons I should argue that the disc wasn't damaged in the spill as the bike had been checked and serviced without finding it despite being deliberately asked to look for it. So I'm not sure what to say. Also how long roughly should a chain fitted with a scotoiler last? Sorry for the long post |

Secondly, I got 24k out of my chain with a scotoiler. However, i do think that it was the front sprocket that knocked the chain out that quickly. I used to ride in town, so a lot of on/off throttle work. Rictus, achieved the astonising ammonunt of 45000 on a chain with oiler ![]() HTH |

So after 7300 miles my chain should still have loads of life left? What about the sprockets?

Original C&S on my ZX6 lasted 53,000 miles, fitted with Scottoiler from new, SV650 had 31,000 on it when I sold it, fitted with Scotty from new too, still had the original C&S with plenty of life left in them.
When either is chain or sprockets are knackered it's a waste to fit the other new, you won't get full life from the new part, Fit new chains and sprockets together at the same time.

I finally have a paddock stand so I decided to check my chain (Dont worry this isn't the first time just the first time with the back wheel of the ground) and I have tight and loose spots in the chain. Is this someting to worry about and if it is what do I need to fix it?

I'm at nearly 17,000 without an oiler. C&S is still looking good for at least another 4k. I just look after it well.
I'll be getting a Loobman again! It's a no frills scott oiler, at less than £20 too. |

Anyone know why when I turn the wheel and check the cain tension in a number of places so areas are quite tight and some are loose, is this something to worry about?

Probably. All chains havre areas that are slightly tighter than others but where a chain has a definite tight spot, so it's very loose at one point and tight as a rod at another, it's time for a replacement.
The chain should always be adjusted for the correct tolerance at the worst tight spot so that the gearbox bearings aren't over-stressed, which would be mega expensive. My chain was so fooked that when adjusted at the tight spot left it flapping loose elsewhere and it slipped a tooth on the rear sprocket twice which is pretty scary if you consider the consequences of it wither breaking or coming off and twisting round the wheel hub and locking it solid. Change the sprockets too - I ignored that advice (after all, they looked okay) and my chain only lasted 4k miles (it was a cheapy and I think somewhat faulty too). Today I got it changed with new sprockets (Iris gold x-ring and Talon sprockets) and it's a helluva lot better and with my new Loobman coming I expect it to last a good 20-30k. . |

Whilst we're on the subject, sort of, the number of teeth on the sprockets is different between faired & unfaired is it not. Also something to bear in mind if changing.

It's the original chain and has been used for 7400 miles with a scottoiler if my chain is fooked why could it have gone so quickly (if 20k is an average figure).
