Not yet even new to the SV, but am looking to buy... - SV650.org

Hey all, I've been looking around for a new bike, i havent been riding for about 3 years now as I was waiting until I could afford a new bike to keep from the worries of a used one. Everything I have found on the SV650S seems to be perfect, though one of my friends (owns an R6) says I will be unhappy with the power. Now I realize this is almost 2000 dollars cheaper than a GSX-R 600, so it wont have as much power, but does it have enough for all of you? I'm a little over 6' tall, and weigh about 160 lbs...I dont care to be able to go 150 miles an hour down the interstate, but I'd like a decent amount of power in town and acceptable power on the highway...any thoughs or idea's? Thanks all for your time

for me the sv is nearly perfect. loads of useable power and amazing value for what you get. i can stay with the "big boys" on their over powered hairdryers through most situations, and it is a great town bike too.
only downside for me is that as i am 6' and 110kg on a good day, i could do with a little more oomph for overtakes etc.
my sv will do an indicated 140mph, so is plenty fast enough, and sounds so much better than an IL4!

Suck it and see!

See if you can get a test ride and make the decision for your self.

I'm happy with mine and I have ridden it fast with ZX9's, GSXR1000's, Aprilia Falcos, CBR's, Milles etc. Course it ain't gonna keep up on the straights, but it wasn't left to far behind. If you are left miles behind you and your mates are probably riding too fast anyway

Ah very good point! I have never heard of anyone being able to actually test drive a bike where I live, but thats a good thought, it would at least be worth asking. Thanks everyone for your insight! Hopefully in a few months when its warm enough to ride again and there isnt snow everywhere, i'll be on a new SV650S

Welcome my friend to this great site. The USA 2004 stock SV650 Naked has 73.5 HP @ 8750 RPM and 47.1 Ft. Lbs of torque @ 7250 RPM (stock rear wheel numbers). It will do the 1/4 mile in 11.87 Seconds @ 110 MPH and the 0 to 60 time is 4.44 seconds flat. The top speed is listed at 128 MPH.
I believe the SV650 has enough power to get you a speeding ticket in all 50 states and most countries of the world. Cheers, Richard

I ride an SV and a GSXR.

The SV is actually a more satisfying bike to ride day to day, and it can do almost what my GSXR.

Ultimately not as fast but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I don't know what its like your side of the pond, but over here it getting ridiculus regarging speed. What with cameras everywhere speeding fines (tax) on the rise jail for speeds well in excess 100 mph. Its better to have a bike where you realize what speeds you are actually doing. The latest gen of sport bikes like 04 blade are great bike & do things so well you don't realise how soon you in triple figures.

i've owned a CBR 600F SPORT and a SV650S and i have to say the SV was the better bike (more useable) plus cheaper insurance.
the CBR was a great handling bike but in the real world it is too fast i had it doing 96 mph in second gear

on a privite road

oh and there is the sound i had race cans on both and the SV wins hands down
