I posted a note around Christmas about my SV1000 and the cost of repairing it after a 15mph (if not slower) "sorry I didn't see you" type crash.
Well, just heard that at £4000 the insurers think it's uneconomic to fix. Less than 4 months old and in the breakers already !!! I wonder what sort of offer they'll make to me - pretty low I suspect .... Next decision I have is what to replace it with. I've got about £1500 - £2000 plus the insurers cheque so should have quite wide choice. Tempted to go back to the supersports 600 again, but who knows. I'm getting a hire bike delivered by BLD on Monday and, although I've got no say in what I get, it's going to be a naked SV1000 (I suppose there was never any chance of it being an R1 !!!!). If I get something other than an SV, I'd just like to thank everyone who has answered some of my stupid questions, and wish everyone all the best for the future too. It's a really great forum, and I'll probably still look in from time to time. |

Hey this might not ba as bads as you think, if the bike is less than year old they should/might replace it with a new one of the same model, i know for sure that they do that with cars.
I dont know if you know aything about insurance but i kinda work in insurance and replacement vehicles, if they offer you a heap less than what you paid for it what you need to do is refuse there first offer (if you refuse the first offer it might mean you will have to give the bike they are lending you back), then find as many proofs of how much a bike of that year colour, condition and milage is to buy (local dealers, mcn, bike ad's), and send it to them they should then change the offer, to match what you are telling its worth. Now i nkow this works with cars and as far as i now all vehicle insurance works the same. So give it a try, and let us know how it goes. |

How bad is the damage to the bike and what catagory are they writing it off as?
Someone rear ended me about a month ago, i got a hire bike etc. They wrote my bike off as a CAT D write off. Basically it was more expecive to keep me on the hire bike + repair it. If its a catagory D should be able to stick it back on the road cheaply. Catagory C will be slightly more difficult, and b/a dont go back on the road normally. If everything frame/subframes/wheels etc are all good. (And you get to keep your bike at a reasonable price and depending on how you use the bike) be worth making it road worthy and haveing a very cheap bike. If they offer you your bike back cheaply, it might be worth keeping it to sell here (cheap sv1k needs x to get it back on the road) or part it out for more money ![]() Dan |

my bike was 36 hours old and they didnt replace it. it depends on the insurance company. i could have included that in my policy if i paid more for it, but didnt. doh.
i got the full amount in the end. what did it was getting them to phone the dealer i bought the bike from for proof of what i paid for it. u gotta be tough with em. |

I would be very hard with the insurance, the bike is written off, is not very old and was not in any way the riders fault. It should be replaced like for like in my opinion, (which is probably worth nothing) :P
I would advise buying GAP insurance in future which should replace the vehicle whatever the age or condition, not sure if it works with bikes, does with cars though You could always push very hard and end up with a Triumph ST ![]() |
