I know this is a SV forum, but its always been of great help before, plus this is so that I Don't have to use the SV in this weather.
Now I've noticed that the Kawaka GT750 seems to be slipping though the gears, either when I pull away or when I'm in 4th and 5th above 4-5,000 rpm. My problem is I'm not sure if its the gear box on its way out, or the shaft drive. Does the shaft need adjusting like the chain? Or is it something to do with the fact that the bike seems to be eatin/burning oil, but is that due to the cold weather. I've been keepin it topped up, though I should be doing a oil change when I get the time this week. Can anyone help, I'd rather not use the SV, as I'm trying to keep it for nice days. Thanks. |

Shaft drive bike is just like a shaft drive can, it's all gears and oil, nothing to adjust and not a lot to go wrong.
It sounds like a slipping clutch to me. As for burning oil, well that could be valve guides or piston rings but I can't see how that would make the clutch slip unless the oil level is very low and the clutch it getting hot??? If the oil level is really that low, you might have got the odd flash from the oil level light?? Start with the cheap fixes first, do an oil change and use a good quality oil of the right viscosity 10-40? With the outside temp being low the oil will be quite thick at startup, so don't make it harder for the engine by using car type 20-50. Make sure you have slack in the clutch cable, or that the cable isn't sticking and stopping the clutch from fully engaging My 2P john

I've had shafties and some need oil topped up like a cars gearbox.
But I agree from what you've told us sounds like a slipping clutch, check cable first. |
