Clutch Basket (please help) (probably Mike1234 or Rictus)

Right this really only applies to people who have knowledge of the SV engine, either by having it apart themselves, or having acess to a haynes manual.

I'm changing the oil and filter at the moment, and also the clutch cover seal as it has been leaking a little bit.

With the clutch cover off, just to check I took hold of the clutch basket to check for any play.

The clutch basket moves maybe 2-3mm around its vertical axis. (i.e. if you look down upon the clutch and grab the right and left sides of the clutch basket, pushing and pulling will result in the clutch basket rotating around its imaginary vertical axis a little bit, enough for the edges of the basket to move in/out about 2-3mm).

I need to know if this is normal or not before I re-assemble the whole lot. I'm just wondering if the SV's clutch basket is similar to many other bikes in it having a cush mechanism of some description to dampen out drivetrain shock.

If anyone could tell me if this is normal or not (looking primarily at Mike 1234 or Rictus), I'd either investigate further and replace repair what is at fault, or put it back together knowing full well "they are all like that sir".

The clutch plates have a bit of float in them, but not the whole clutch assembly. Yes it does have a cush drive sort of setup, but I don't think it should be doing what you say.

Remove the clutch plates, by undoing the 6 clutch bolts in a diagonal fashion, a little at a time, so as not to bend your clutch plates. With those removed see if you can tell where it's moving. I've never heard of movent like that. Usually the clutch assembly sits there as solid as a rock. It may be possible that one of the bushes there is worn out.

I may investigate tomorrow. I didn't want to take it all apart though, then only to hear the possible, "they are all like that".

Cheers for the input Lockers, have you ever had yours apart? Having looked at it again, the play is probably even less than I quoted, but I want to make sure its all hunky dory before putting it back together.

Can't remember to be honest but I would seriously doubt it.

Have only stripped engines recently - It's a lot easier when you don't have to worry about putting them back together again.

Just to clarify. Seriously doubt what Mike 1234?

a) That it is normal. Therefore it requires further investigation.
b)That it matters. Therefore I should re-assemble it all and go out and play on it this weekend.

I doubt that there should be that much play in the clutch basket but as I said, I haven't paid much attention to things like that recently as I've been stripping engines rather than rebuilding them.
