I was testing the stopping power of my rear brake, and i get a loud clanking when the rear locks up. Any ideas what makes this noise? Is it the engine or gearbox or chain? Does anyone else get this noise? Obviously its not something i do in normal riding.

Does it still happen if you've got the clutch in? If you're doing it in gear, the engine's basically pushing against the locked wheel, so it could be that...

I get the same if I lock the back, if you don't release the rear it does stall. Not sure why it doesn't stall straight away mind you.
Must be that OE slipper clutch? ![]() |

the engine will stall pretty much straight away, but unless its a prolonged rear wheel lock up, the engine will fireback into life once the brake is released! (a bit like bump starting) the clunk will almost definately be the engine cutting out !

Maybe a loose caliper or torque arm?

Well, on the GS I did my DAS on, if there was a lot of rear brake going on the engine would judder like that- big clunkclunkclunk. Never done it on the SV, because I learned better on the DAS

I use the rear brake comprehensively and have never had it judder. The SV's rear brake is smooth and effective.
The judder could also be a warped disc, possibly caused by the rear wheel, when off the bike, being left disc side down and some weight put on it. . |

Could be rear chatter....
I've had this a couple of times braking like foook (and going down the gears pretty sharpish). Although it only happened when coming into a roundabout from a silly speed, and braking into Mansfield at Cadwell a couple of times last year. Dan. |
