Default Newbie question on exhausts

Hi

Been away from bikes for about 5 years, coming back and decided on an SV650S. Found a nice one at a dealer, blue, 2001 only 8k on the clock supposed to be picking it up tomorrow...

And heres the "but", it's currently got a T&R(?) can on it which is not legal. Dealer was going to put a standard end can back on but has now told me that the original pipes were butchered in order to fit the race system and therefor they can't put the standard on, or MOT it.

So question is - anyone heard of this as a problem - and if I go ahead and buy the bike - how do I get it through an MOT in August without spending zillions on a complete new system???

Help!

Best bet mate, is to either get a really cheap complete system from a breakers for the SV, or Buy yourself a second end can a Quill etc for the Mots.
I'm lucky enough to own a brand new complete standard system a Quill road legal and a Reni end can, so I have all bases covered.
By the way a complete new sv650 system is between £300-£400 from Suzuki, my Quill I got off ebay for £80

I was in the same situation when I bought my bike last year - an 02 650S K2 model with a G-Force race can on it and no standard original can. Firstly, make sure you use it as a strong bargaining tool on the price as the bike is technically illegal and therefore unsale-able in its current state ("not fit for purpose" - i.e. road use - is the phrase to use, I think)

Secondly, once you've got a good price, don't worry too much about it and keep an eye out for a standard or road legal system on this forum (where I bought mine) or on e-Bay or at a breakers. They are quite common so you shouldn't have any probs.

My MoT is due up in September and the more I hear from people, the more I am tempted to take the bike in with the race can on and see what happens, it's not too bad at tickover revs (which is apparently how they test for noise limits in the MoT) and more and more people are saying its now a discretionary thing for pass/failure anyway

just my 2 penn'th

As already said, use it as a big bargaining tool.

Don't pay the orginal agreed price and then keep the cans on anyway it'll sound better

Simon you bufoon A std exhust for an SV is more like £630!!!

Like Si said, either look for another can, a 'road legal' alternitive with removeable baffle, or a second hand system. They can come up as cheaply as £25 from the likes of (shudders) JHS, and Ebay. if they have the can, then you can get a collar welded onto it so that you can 'slip' it on to the collector thats been cut. Many bases to be covered. If you try to get £150 knocked off then that would go towards a removeable baffle can, or get the dealer to include one in the price.

I'd say either get a friendly mot centre that aren't bothered, or as has been recommended, buy a cheap road legal endcan and switch the two round. Also, definately use this to drive the price down- it may be a mod you want, but the dealer doesn't need to know that

If they've butchered the bike to the point where they can't fit the original can again... then I'd be tempted to go and find another bike. Who knows what else they've bodged on this one!

If it's just a case that they've cut the pipework...then no problem - that shouldn't stop them refitting the original exhaust!

Thanks for the advice all

Suggested to the dealer that there was no way I was buying an illegal bike and, miraculously, they managed to find a new system that could be put on after all, but they can't do it for tomorrow.

So, I'm picking up my new toy tomorrow and will have to take it back in a week or so to get it MOTed.

Looking forward to it now

as long as your can does not say "NOT FOR ROAD USE" it will not fail on the exhaust, i does not need a stamp on it just along as it does not say "NFRU"
