Hi all,
I dont normally have much luck getting responses from queries on forums but its worth a try. I'll give you the jist of the story so far; A few weeks back I started having problems with my SV650 (2001 K1 naked model), when riding along and trying to acelerate to overtake larrys or whatever I would temporary lose alot of power and start slowing down. Now im no mechanic so I was not sure if it was me doing something wrong (Im also a new rider) or if it was something wrong with the bike. The best way to describe the problem is like it losses one carb (thats what a friend said who took it out for a spin). So I've replaced the spark plugs and removed the scottoiler to try if they where having an effect. At first it seems fine but then it come back and worse than ever. It is fine in the mourning when riding to work but yesterday coming back about 6 or so miles into the trip back (its a 25mile one way trip) it started to play up and it just would not go (as it should do) you have to really rev the engine to get it to pull away and then when riding back it might have sparks of speed and your flown backwards with the sudden aceleration. Ive spoke to my uncle who works with all kinds of cars and bikes in his spare time and he thinks it might be a crank chain or something. Im just wondering if anyone else has ever had this type of problem and if so what was the source of the problem? Oh its also restricted (A2 licence). Thank you for your time and I hope someone will be able to reply. Shane |

Take the restrictor washers out and see if it solves.
![]() Sounds like crap in your float bowls blocking a main jet. |

Could be a fuel blockage. Drain and clean the carbs to see if this helps. Could also be water in the fuel. Again the only way to sort this is to completely drain the fuelling system, tank and everything.
Difficult to diagnose without actually experiencing the problem. |

Is it mechanical or electrical? Does the rev counter drop off? If its fuel it sounds more like what has already been suggested, either dirty fuel or chambers, or there may be a problem with the restrictors. take them out, and try it, Promise you will put them back though ![]() |

your saying its fine in the mornings, i would check that the chokes havent seized, but it does sound like a fuel problem, is the bike modified at all? dynojet kit? air filter? race can?

The bikes a standard bike, no Mods besides the restrictor and scott oiler (which is disconnected). I was tempeted to see if its the restrictor which is why I mentioned it.
It sounds mechanical, and the revs stay constant. Changing gears has no effect (except to increase or decrease the revs). No offence but my uncle does tend to know what hes on about but I dont, so I might have got it wrong about what he said (as it went over my head). It was either crank chain, or cam shaft or carbs, something beginning with a 'C' anyway lol sorry...very much a rockie when it comes to bikes, computers i know but bikes is alien to me at the moment. Thanks for the feedback I'll suggest this things to my uncle to see if he can help me do it when he comes over next. I have ordered some Front and rear paddock stands to help with working on it, as it only has a side stand and is a pain to get to at times. |

Another vote for fuelling... Is it worst at around 5-6k rpm?

That tends to be when the problem would start, I would be riding home (after riding to work without a problem) then about 6 miles into the journy coursing at a steady 60(ish) then it would just spluter and then the power just dies but the revs stay very much the same.
Is draining and cleaning the carbs a difficult taks to do (as in prefessional)? Stupid question: How did the crap get in the fuel tank? Is that a normal thing to happen, or would something cause it? is it down to me not doing something? |

Could be rust from teh inside of the tank? Maybe water getting in? Not really sure. Draining the bowls is pretty straightforward though I always get petrol everywhere
![]() Personally I'd dump the fuel in the carbs and tank, and clean out the tank as well, and maybe fit a wee fuel filter between tank and carbs. Might help, might not, but it's fairly straightforward and cheap and helps narrow the options down at least. But then I'm no mechanic so I wouldn't neccesariyl give that all that much credability, it's just what I'd do.
