Default To change the oil or not? >>Now changed<<

After struggling to get the sump plug off my bike I finally got round to ringing the dealer to try and get them to undo the sump plug since they tightened it, and that's when I find out how awkward they are.

After explaining the problem to the guy at the service desk, he goes off to ask the service manager if they can undo it for me half a turn or so and tighten it up so I can undo it, but instead of saying no problem he comes back and says no they can't do that. I ask why and he starts by telling me they will not touch something that someone else starts, but I tell him I didn't start as I couldnt undo the bolt so he goes off again and then comes back and tells me it wouldn't be safe for them to do it and let me ride off. I tell him it's on proper tight and since they tightened it they should atleast undo it and retorque it correctly, he goes off again and comes back to tell me there are a number of reasons it could be so tight like it being siezed and that if I want to book it in for an oil change or service then I'm welcome to do that but there's nothing more he can do. Well I know where I won't be going to get any servicing done now!

So I either leave the oil change and continue using the bike for another 2000 miles, the oil has gone completely black but more worryingly once the bike hits 100 degrees celsius it gets difficult to shift from 1st to 2nd no thanks to using the bike for commuting 10 miles at a time for most of the 2000 miles done mainly Central London, and then let a dealer service it or I try and undo the damn bolt myself and risk destroying the head and shearing it off, what should I do?

Ring another couple of dealers and get them to do it?

I had my oil cooler cover screw on proper tight and asked the workshop at steve jordan's to remove it for me when it was in for a service. I had tried to undo it but gave up when I realised I was in serious danger of shearing the groove away.

I wouldn't leave the old oil in there for the sake of the engine.

If the original dealer was to undo it and it went wrong then it would be their own fault as they did it up but the problem is if I ask another dealer to do it and things go wrong like it shears off, then what happens? This is the biggest problem I'm having to consider hence the reason for wanting to leave it.

Go back to the dealer and scream blue murder. Present them with an invoice for your time and fuel and make it very clear that you will be invoicing them for another garage's time and expenses incurred as they've done a faulty job by over-tightening the bolt in the first place.

Refuse to leave until you have spoken to the owner of the business and explain that you will be detailing the outcome of this episode on a very busy website and letting the world at large know how shoddy their service is if they don't pull their finger out and undo the freakin' bolt by half a turn right there and then.

Why? I don't see the logic. If I go in to a random dealer and I say, "Just loosen that bolt would you chap? My rachet's a bit on the short side. Make sure you don't round the bolt off mind." and they said ok, and they sheared it, then you surely could say sort it out right? After all, they should notundertake something they don't think they can do. They would then have to fix it because they messed it up, not because it was tight in the first place. After all, that's what they accepted money to sort out in the first place! The bolt could become stuck for whatever reason.

In anycase, I like Jonboys suggestion as a first resort. After all, they can only say no (again).

I'm with Jonboy, but I'd try turning up and being firm but calm 1st and then ranting if it gets out of hand, they over torqed it, they should undo it as if it shears it'll be their problem.

Oil goes black in next to no time, but never skip a service interval and oil change just for an easy life, the oil change it the most important part of any service

If they shear the head off it they could argue that it was on too tight, which I believe it is, and so it would only be reasonable for me to pay for them to remove the rest of the bolt.

I'm not skipping a service interval though as I've only done 2100 miles in six months and so I've got another six months or 1900 miles to go.
