Default How quickly you get used to quality...

I bought an Arai Condor about a year ago and I've worn it daily since then., apart from the period when i wasn't able to ride... Now, I'm not a fan of the vents at all, or the visor system, and at times I've been pretty critical of it, but today it got absolutely soaked and so I got hte old HJC ZF-8 out of the cupboard...

I really liked that lid when I'd not tried anything else, but now it feels like wearing a tin pan on my head... What a piece of junk! It's perfectly formed to my head, I might say- better than the Arai- and the visor system works as well as I remember, much better in the wet, but it's so uncomfortable and cheap feeling... It just struck me as strange that my opinion on it's changed so dramatically in just a year.

That is all

"...not all stories in the big city have a moral"

Actually, it might be "Never buy anything good, because if you do then the less good stuff that you were always completely happy with will instantly become worthless"

Very very true. I'm into DJing and saved for ages to buy top of the range (at the time) decks. I could definately play to a vastly higher standard on the new decks than bog standard ones. I improved so much I started getting gigs, all fine so far. Then I got a gig at one club and asked what tables they had, they said Vestax (same manufacturer as mine) and I foolishly assumed they would be the same model as mine (most other models they had made previously were too poor quality for a club environment). Of course, I turn up to find ancient bottom of the range vestax and I am the first to admit that I made a right pigs ear of my set. 6 months previously I would have been fine, but I was so used to the safety net provided by my better turntables that I had let my standards slip and things I could 'get away with' on mine, I couldn't on cheapo ones.

On the subject of protective gear, do you also always feel naked when going back to older kit? I learnt to ride in a button up leather jacket, jeans and hiking boots. Now if I 'only' have full armoured textiles without a back protector my spine feels like it's asking for trouble. I suppose it's a good things really. I'm just worried that when I get 2pc race leathers, I won't have peace of mind on those occassions (extreme heat/bad weather/touring) to go back to wearing textiles.

I felt just about naked in my cordura yesterday- no hip armour which really bothers me since I broke it... But then again, my ridiculously massive Frank Thomas Xtremesport jacket makes me feel like the Michelin Man with it's vast shoulder pads, so it all cancels out Hurry up and dry, proper gear!

the moral of the story is an old and simple one.

You cant know what its like to be rich without having been poor.

I've been both rich and poor. As a result I have 2 lids: a Bieffe
for £31.50 and a Shark for £99.99. Don't see much difference between
the two. The only difference is that the Shark has a gold sticker
and somewhat better ventilation.

I guess I am the sort of person who doesn't appreciate the finer
things in life.

had the same thing, when I first started riding I bought a agv kinetic and thought it was a really good helmet, then i bought a arai condor and the agv feels so cheap and just does not fit my head shape at all. I'm not saying AGV do not make good helmets, the kinetic i had was a very early one and the arai was just in a different league. Agv have recently dropped some of their models/quality has gone up (noticeably) and the still relatively new Ti-tech has bought a lot of people back to AGV and restored a lot of faith in the company.
