I have heard that just sitting an SV exhaust will glow. BUT, take this with a grain of salt, I seem to remember a thread here somewhere pleading with people to not just hand out info they have no idea may or may not be true. I'm sure the bike swamis will be along in a few hours......

Sounds like either you left the choke on or it's a little stuck. Leaving the choke on for a couple of minutes will indeed cause the front header pipe to glow cherry red.

Hot running/glowing exhaust is indicative of either incorrect ignition timing or, as is more likely here, lean running. Or it could just be that you had it running at a standstill, (little or no cooling), for an extended period on a hot day, but it would have to have been an appreciable time, not just the time that it takes to put your lid and gloves on.
Was the bike rejetted to suit the pipe? Once you moved off was it running properly? Have there been any other occasions that this has happened? All of those are important.

yes, they will do that. Some of it is down to very thin downpipe material so the outside is nearly at the same temperature as the inside, and also the ignition runs with very little advance at these conditions which puts exhaust gas temperatures up.
If it is a carb bike check the throttle position pot adjustment as well as the above suggestions. Mine was set quite a way off which would delay the throttle opening at which the ignition will advance off the "closed throttle" value. You only tend to notice it when the light is low, and it can be quite disconcerting but probably isn't a big issue. The moral of the story is not to sit with the bike running to "warm-up", there isn't any need. Just start it, let it settle down for 10-20sec and then ride off gently, only using the performance once it has warmed up properly after a few miles. |

The bike was running a little longer then usual and it was about 85F (at 11:0pm. The bike was rejeted at the same time the exhaust was put on. I think i will try some New York strips or even so marshmallows.
